Has anyone had experience with medical leave?

My DS has been having a lot of chest problems and they are talking about the possibility of him taking medical leave and returning next year. Has anybody had experience with this before? I just don't know that he will want to go back after he is home. Any thoughts?

Medical Set backs

Medical set backs are rare but not unheard of. If your M/N or PC's medical issue cannot be resolved without impacting his or her ability to participate in all aspects of academy life for an extended period of time, they may be sent home for medical reasons. I know of 2 mids during my mids plebe year that had knee surgery and tonsil surgery that came back after a week and were able to carry on in their academy duties. There have been other instances where an issue hasn't been resolved so quickly and the M/N was sent home to return the following year. Assuming your DD/DS is a PC, find out if they will make them go through INDOC all over again. Whatever you decide, if they come home, send them to the local community college if you can. Have them take Calc, physics etc so when they return these classes will be easy and have them work out and stay in shape- really important. Most of all have them get better!

I did "ask to join group" a week or so ago, but did not receive any response. Do you know if I need to do something else?

Thanks kpskilegac. Yes my DS is a PC. They have relieved him of some of the physical activity to no avail. His pain is still severe. I didn't know that they would let you leave for a week or so and go back. They said they will let him call us this evening to talk about the possibilities. He had applied to one of the local universities as a back-up before, so we would see if he could just go there. So disappointing after all the work to get there.

I had plenty of visits to Patten infirmary and North Shore hospital. I had my appendix out later in plebe year in which I missed about a week of classes and lived at the infirmary for about a month. The only long term fallout was an incomplete in one of my classes. Originally the professor failed me for missing one of the lab sessions. An appeal to the department head got it changed to an I. I ended up making it up 1/C year.

I had a medical setback in my 3/C year where I went home for about eight months. The only long term effect of that was that my class ring is different from eventual class year. There was some behind the scenes stuff related to my setback that I only found out about much later. Doctors, Nav Sci and I forgot who else all had to weigh in on it before it was finally approved.

It all proved to just be speed bumps on the path to graduation, not roadblocks.

Thanks KPEngineer. Glad to hear that you can still make it even with health issues. I can be a little more knowledgeable about it when I talk to my DS tonight.

Thanks for the input. Unfortunately, we got word today that he will start processing tomorrow to come home. We haven't heard how long yet, but it's pretty sad.

Thanks everyone. It is heartbreaking to know what he went through to be coming home. We are still waiting for our 6:30pm info call and it is now after 8:00pm. I'll let you know when there is an update. Again, thanks for the wise words!

Praying for your son and your entire family. As sad as it is now, he'll look back at this as a very early learning experience that many of us wouldn't get to until later in life. Blessings for all the best outcomes...God Bless.

I just booked a flight home for our DS. He'll be home at 11:00 tonight. He is saddened that he doesn't get the opportunity to stay at KP and heal, but knows that he really needs a lot of rest to get beyond this as well. We are already looking into classes at the local university where he earned credit as a high school student. More classes that mean nothing to KP, but will help him in the future. I wish each of you and your DS/DDs nothing but the best. We'll be back here full force again next year! Thanks and God Bless!

This could be a blessing in disguise. He should take Physics 1 and 2, Calc 1 and 2 and Chemistry, Economics and English. These are all killers at KP and he could return much, much stronger academically. It's definitely only a bump in the road. Others have returned and done very well.
