Taking the 80's theme off of the MTV thread so it won't divert anymore.

Show your age, by posting 1 unique fact that you remember as a HS sr. No need to say the yr.

Mine: MASH ended and the big news was CA cut into the finale and started the news with 10 minutes left to the show. They had to re-broadcast it again so the west coast could see the finale.

Sorry, Pima, I can't cut it off at one, as there were 3 HUGE events during my senior year of high school.

  • Mark David Chapman shoots and kills John Lennon outside The Dakota in NY. Howard Cosell breaks the news late in the Monday Night Football broadcast.

  • Iranian-held American hostages freed after being held captive for 444 days.

  • John Hinckley shoots President Ronald Reagan (and 3 others) at the Washington Hilton.

I remember all 3 and where I was at when I learned about those issues.

I actually can still see the weather on the day Reagan was shot. It was a cold, gray overcast day looking like it was about to snow. The thought that he was shot because of Jodie Foster was insane to me.

I also remember kids in school crying when Lennon died. To this day I still don't get it, you didn't know him at all. Back story: a girl in our HS died @ that time, she was hit by a drunk driver and dragged for 20 feet...the guy thought he hit a cat. Yet, there seemed to be more heartbreak over Lennon than her. It didn't make sense.

The release of the hostages, who could forget turning on the TV every night and Peter Jennings starting it off with Good evening it has been XXX days. Then to see Reagan stand up to the podium and say they were released and on their way home was amazing. I still get chills.

Did all of that happen in 1 yr? Wow.

For me the big news was AIDS. Everyday it was on the news about trying to figure out "patient 0". People were afraid to be operated on because they knew it was a blood transfusion issue, so families would donate blood for their family member.

I am sure for younger ones, maybe Scout, their news would be tied to AIDS also...Ryan White dieing.

Richard Nixon resigned. Driving down to Maguire AFB in NJ to meet family coming back from Germany- I can remember listening to his goodbye speech on the car radio- it was really sad and kind of pathetic no matter how you felt about Nixon: "my mother- now she was a saint. No books will be written about her." It kind of reminded you that no matter how much you demonize folks- they are people too.

Martin Luther King, Jr and Bobby Kennedy were assassinated.

Here is a easy one - A USNA grad was elected President and the country had a big birthday party!

I remember Nixon resigning, and somehow it is associated in my mind with an Eclipse that yr.

I also remember in HS Teddy running for President.

My biggest memory prior to marriage was the VP debate, went along the lines of something like this, " I know Jack, and let me tell you, your are no Jack Kennedy." Bentsen to Quayle.

OBTW, I think that was @ the same time as Gary Hart and his follow me which resulted in him getting caught on a yacht called "Monkey Business"

Also wasn't that the same time Jim Bakker got caught too?

Bruno,

Our 1st dog was named Maguire after McGuire AFB.

Darn it, Bruno! You made me lose my bet with Pima! I was laying money that your memory was going to be either "Pythagorea publishes his theory", or "Apple lands on Newton's head, changes science forever". :shake:

I know, I know, I'll take my yellow card and show myself to the exit... :yllol:

Joe Frazier beats Muhammad Ali at Madison Square Garden..

My senior year...

2. US Congressman Leo Ryan and several others were killed in Guyana by members of the "People's Temple." Several hundred folks then committed suicide with "cyanide laced kool-aid" sparking the phrase: "He drank the kool-aid."
3. The Broncos lost Super Bowl!

Just a few I remember...
