I am currently headed off to VMI within the next week and decided to complete my DODMERB and CFA before i left. I took the CFA and was satisfied with half the scores. How do they look? What are your opinions on USNA's view of students attending a military college and how it effects their acceptance?

Here are the scores:

Basketball Throw: 63 ft.
Pull-Ups: 7
Shuttle Run: 5.93 seconds :thumb:
Sit-Ups: 62
Push-Ups: 27
Mile Run: 7:36 minutes

My shuttle run is correct, I'm just very quick. However the push ups were one portion that knocked me down a few pegs. other than a slightly below average pull up score... how do you think i did?

P.S. I plan on re taking the test after rat line at VMI!

I am assuming you are a male based on your username. Do you run sprints for track?

No offense, but if I would retake it if I were you. At NASS we were told the 3 most important parts were mile run, sit-ups, and push-ups. In all three areas, you did not meet the averages.

Your shuttle run is indeed beyond impressive. Your basketball throw beats mine.

Your pull-ups would be better if you could get 10+ range (7 isn't horrible).
Get a pull-up bar or access to one and do 5 sets to failure every other day.

With sit-ups, try to get another dozen more or so.
Make sure you are going as fast as possible. Thump the ground hard enough to get a little bit of momentum but not to the point where u dig a hole. Also, only your shoulder blades have to touch the ground, not your head.

As you can tell, you really need to double those push-ups.
Did you take breaks on the up position?
At NASS, this how many of us maxed out (there were a few studs that can crank 75 non-stop, but not me):
do a bearable amount (at least 45 but the more the better)
rest in the up position for a 3-5 seconds, crank out 6 more
rest again and crank out 5 more
rest again and crank out 4 more
near the end, you might only be able to crank out 1 or 2 but you just keep going till you reach 75 or till you drop. Anything above 60 exceeds average. The trick is to reach 75 within 2 minutes.

Aim for sub 7 on the mile with sub 6 being very good.

Keep in mind the CFA isn't testing your athletic talents, but simply your physical abilities. Anyone that works on the various parts can exceed average and even max out. I have not yet made my school's varsity soccer team but passed the CFA and maxed out on push-ups (I will retake to max out in more areas).
Good luck

Navy 2016. Thanks for the advice. I do intend on taking the CFA again sometime during the ratline.
I feel like there were several contributing factors to my unsucessfulness in the pull ups, sit ups and mile time. Pull ups is something i had never practiced, i have always done chin ups and I did not pause like you suggested for push ups. Hopefully i can improve on some of these scores with your advice. Thank you!

Do they superscorce the CFA, like taking the best scores from each trial? Or do all the scores have to come from one test?

I was told it is one test. You are neither rewarded nor punished for taking it multiples times either.

It's not like the SAT. USNA takes the most recent CFA. If you want to retake, you ask USNA to zero out your scores. When you retake, your new scores go in. There's no penalty for taking multiple times but, you want to ensure you improve each time.

Haha thanks for the unintended compliment (I maxed push ups and sit ups by doing them non stop and finished with tons of extra time at NASS). I just wanted to add for pull up training I would suggest just getting an iron gym pull up bar or something similar. I have two pull up bars and can do 30 dead hangs. It comes in handy when in need of free Marine Corp merchandise when they have their tent at events ;). Just keep training and mix it up (palms away, palms toward, vary grip width, look up pull up variations on youtube, do pyramids, etc.). Just keep on training!
