Dropped off DS at University of Alabama yesterday,
he's rooming with 3 other AROTC freshman - 3 very sharp kids, all 30+ ACT's.
Just got a text message, they went running at 5 this morning, getting ready for PT Test on Tuesday.

UA, total of 16 scholarship students for this yr.
((2 are 3AD's) up from 12 total scholarship students last yr.)
An additional 16 cadets who applied for but did not get scholarships are also there for the early AROTC orientation.
This crew of 32 will be issued uniforms etc., during orientation.

An additional 30 or so students are signed up for Freshman Military Science,
these students have not contacted AROTC about their intentions,
AROTC will observe these walk-on's to evaluate their level of commitment before issuing uniforms etc.

Thought I would chime in on this thread with our update.

We take our son to school tomorrow morning, University of Idaho.

They will go over all the forms they were sent that day.

AFPT will be Thursday morning at 6:00am, the scholarship cadets providing they pass the AFPT will swear in and sign the contract later that morning. Uniforms will be issued on Friday.

U of I is a smaller battalion, they have only 3 Scholarship cadets this year. So far a total of 18 signed up, a few will be SMP.

Son is going through Rush and will most likely join the same Fraternity as his brother, it's going to be a busy couple days. His brother will be a MS4 this year.

The battalion is having an orientation for the parents as well, a great idea for all the parents new to ROTC.

Next Saturday the Battalion has their annual Raft trip down the Snake river, sort of a way for all the new cadets to get to know each other.

On a side note, our older son will be returning from CTLT Friday. He has been at Ft. Bragg NC with the 82nd Airborne, he will have some great stories for the cadets. During his time there he has been an acting PL for a Platoon who's PL is at Ranger School. They spent a week in the field conducting live fire drills clearing buildings both day and night. Today they are calling live air and artillery fire. He told us it will be hard going back to blanks, paintball, and Airsoft after using live ammo during the drills.

All you new cadets have a lot to look forward to if you put your mind to it.

Good luck to all of you.

I will update as well! It is so much fun to hear what these great kids are up to! My son reported to CU Boulder for NROTC Orientation Aug. 8th. They were taken to Ft. Carson (army base in Colorado Springs) and spent the week learning drills, military rank structure, and the basics of the program. They got to run the Leadership Course, and use the virtual firing range. My son was PUMPED when he got home! He was also completely exhausted - they had the pleasure of night watch, too.

The freshman class has 20 scholarship students and 14 walk ons. It was a great orientation. The Commanding Officer put on a program for the parents which was very informative.

It's been a wild year....it's great to have the adventure finally begin.

My DD is one of the 16 going for early orientation. Maj. Dollar told us at orientation back in June that there were some 3yr AD scholarships available. Will be interesting to see if the recent cuts will affect these scholarships.

Just returned after dropping my son off at college for his 2nd year. Classes don't start until Monday but tonight he had practice for Color Guard for tomorrow's large Freshman Convocation.

Guess I will find out how ROTC is on Monday when it starts.

Glad to hear everyone is off to a great year! cjs, glad to hear from you, hadn't seen you post for a while. Hope your DS has an amazing 2nd year:smile:

It appears every branch and every college are getting a lot of ROTC walk ons. I wonder how many of them applied for a scholarship, and got the TWE, hoping that they can get an IS.

If that is the case, it will be a blood bath TY since IS scholarships are fewer than HS scholarships.

Plus, the reality is the budget will be a factor, and nobody knows yet if there will be an IS board.

Thanks. Hope your son is dong well and has an amazing first year!

Whew...son passed his APFT at Bama this morning (gojack, I'm sure you already got a report, but I'm told yours passed with flying colors as well!) Guess I shouldn't have been worried, but I admit I'm relieved it's over. Doesn't mean any money for mine yet, as he chose to accept the 3AD at Bama over a 4 yr in-state, but it's nice to know that he has that requirement behind him. Cadre is apparently willing to work with those who did not pass, will re-test them next week. Now they're off to uniform and gear issue...

Yes, just got a text that he "passed well" - a boy of few words
Mom's calling the Grandmas, who were the only ones
that were really worried

Congrats to your son leapyear! 1st test done

Good to hear your DS hit the ground running with his APFT:smile:

Yes, the biceps will all be growing, thank goodness for meal plans--my grocery bills are getting a bit ridiculous. The brains, well, isn't it scientifically proven the brain (or at least the important functions)aren't usually done maturing until around 25......we've gotta ways to go:rolleyes:

Great job...congrats to your son. If it's like my son's battalion that made a good impression to say the least. Tell him good luck with Ranger Challenge. I'm not sure it's the same with everywhere but my older son told us that they are required to have at least one MS1 on the Varsity (A Team) Ranger Challenge team, your son went a long way in getting that spot.

Our son's sound alike, Mine is 6'-3" and 160+ lbs, fench post was a good description.

PT Score 280
11:35 run....x-country was a big help with that.

Wish your son good luck.

Still waiting

Wish I could chime in but only have a run time so far. DS was injured second day of hockey tryouts so no PU or SU scores yet. Good news though with the run, placed first out of 50 freshman even with A-C shoulder injury. Also is required to solo in front of the others with the Soldier's Creed this week. Had never read of that happening on the forum but maybe I missed it somewhere.

Any reason for not sending your son to WSU next door in Pullman? More scholarships as well as.... partying..... Kidding kidding haha
