To CC, Fencer, and Flymom,

I can't believe it is our kids final yr. Only yesterday it was what to wear, act at the ALO or MOC interview. We are now approaching the the "other" side.

Best wishes and luck to them and may we all hope that every dream they want will be fulfilled.

I know that our DS took a different path, and although he has his AFSC already; they got theirs last spring, he has no UPT date yet (I think that is in spring). I am waiting with baited breath to see if yours will cross paths with ours.

It's been such a wild journey that began on july 11th 2007 at the USAFA Prep School. Time flew by! Can't believe we are down to months as opposed to years. Theres been alot of blood, sweat, and tears throughout the years but it's all been well worth it. 276 days left!

Thanks to all those on this board who have supported us in our best and worst times. I know I can speak for everyone by saying we really couldn't have made it this far without you guys!

I can't believe we are firsties. It feels like yesterday I was trying to strategically plan my day to minimize the weight in my backpack and the distance I had to run on the strips.

Even though this year will probably be my toughest one yet, I am still glad I made the decision to come here and to challenge myself. I may be a little cynical at times, but the truth is I have enjoyed a lot of my time hear and the opportunities I have had have been absolutely amazing. I have grown so much, I never would have thought it possible.
 
Time definitely flies by. At least for the parents, maybe not the students. Best to all. Mike.
 
It seems like yesterday I was meeting several of you at Olive Garden and talking about how excited I was to be getting a car ;)

2012ers, enjoy your final year at USAFA. It's a special one. Although I can't say I wish I was back there right now, there are definitely things I miss, particularly the people. Be excited for what's next, but enjoy what you have before it disappears...
 
Eagle what is even more frightening to me personally is I remember meeting you in 09 before you graduated at the AFA/Navy game.
 
Im going aero engineer hoping to make it to test pilot school soon after graduation. I hope to one day be a flight test engineer and get some stick time hehehe :)

Haha. I'll take that as advice. Congrats to you and all others graduating this year!
 
When I look at what my son and others have gone through, and how busy their senior year is, I can understand why we think time has raced by and they think it's been dragging. Counting an independent study and a teacher assistance, he is doing 9 classes this semester. I love how some say that an academy education isn't up to par to high end schools; that it's more in line with State-U or a CC. I'd like to see them do 155 credit hours in 4 years; along with military studies/duties and physical requirements.

I believe my son has his final eye exam this week; since prk surgery. Last 3 exams showed him with 20-15 vision. He really wants that pilot slot. Hope it works out for him. He's also applying to various schools for grad school. Hope that works out too,
 
Good luck to your son CC. He has worked so hard to get there, I hope he gets every wish he wants.

I guess I have to say, we lucked out with our DS regarding his eyes. When he started this process back in 07, he was a candidate for PRK. By sophomore yr he was on the cusp, and we told him don't mess with your eyes unless you must. He did his UPT exam (3 days TDY at WP in June) and his eyes were 20/15.

I now see why they wait to do the surgery until their 20/21. Didn't make sense when we were in the weeds of DoDMERB and PPQ, but now it does.

I hope Fencer chimes into give us an update of her twin boys. I actually now feel bad for her because, come May, she is most likely going to start spending a lot of time in airports traveling to wherever each of her sons are assigned. Flipside, she will have enough frequent flyer miles to upgrade in a relatively short time.

OBTW that will be Agagles in a few yrs, since he has 2 going into the AF. One at AFA and one in AFROTC full ride.
 
Enjoy the year 2012 ! With one on the other side (casual status at a UPT base), so far it reminds me of the end of the Band of Brothers - playing softball, and working out waiting for IFS and UPT to start. They know it's the calm before the storm, but are really looking forward to the challenge.

When does 2012 get their AFSCs?
 
They should get their AFSC's next month. They normally did them in the past spring; but with downsizing and changes, they learned from the last class. (They had to go back and give out new assignments to almost 10% of the class). Anyway; I believe during September of the C1C year is going to probably become the norm. That allows all the dream sheets to be done; all junior grades in; gpa/opa figured out; Eye exams for PRK/PQ to be done; etc... This is what an ACO acquaintance told me. Basically, too many variable still remaining when they were doing it in the spring of the C3P0 year.
 
My guys both got cleared for Pilot Training and are so anxiously awaiting the news!

FWIW, AFROTC has changed their program to mimic AFA. They will no longer receive their AFSC until fall of SR yr. 2012 was supposedly the last class to get rated AFSC in spring jr. yr.

Fencer how are you going to manage if your DS's go to 2 different UPT bases and have the same winging on date?

I know it's off topic, but what was his vision prior?
 
Not by any means. The real issue for anyone wanting to fly is they want the person to have perfect vision because they know with age your eyes will weaken, thus that is why some cadets will get PRK. However eyes change until you are @20-21, and in his case his eyes got better.

They worry more about farsighted than near sighted, and if I am correct those are the cadets that need to get waivers.
 
PIMA: We have literally and absolutely NO IDEA how we'll manage. We were so lucky in that they wanted to go together to college. I'm still trying to get used to the idea that they have girlfriends.
 
Well you can always hope both get the same UPT base, so it will make it easier. I know what you mean about the GFs. At this age, you start looking at their relationships differently than when you did when they were in HS. It's more of can this be the one and less of they have only dated for a yr so we'll see where it goes.

Will she be going off with him to UPT? DS and his GF have already had the discussion of him going to UPT, she will not be going in the beginning because she would still have her last yr in college left, but once she is graduated it is their plans that she will be moving to meet him wherever he goes.

You know I kind of miss that whole rollercoaster ride for the HS sr yr., it seems so simple now.
 
Well; son had his final eye exam following PRK surgery from last year. It's "Better" than 20-15 vision. So receiving the waiver for pilot training looks like he's A-OK to go.

Next step is his grad-school apps for admission and scholarships. He's putting in for some pretty big name schools and scholarships. Very competitive. Hope he gets everything that he wants. Since 1st grade it seems that he's worked his butt off. I've always told him that the harder he worked, the more options that would become available; and thus, more choices at fulfilling his dreams. He's believed me, and it's gotten him this far. I've always believed it, and so have my kids. I hope it continues for him. Fingers crossed. LOL!!!!
