Earthquake?

I'm sitting in a 16 story building outside DC - felt the whole building sway - we all evacuated but are now back.

OH yeah! I 1st thought it was a jet going over the house, but when the floors started to do the traditional rollercoaster movement I knew it was an earthquake. It went on for a while, as a person that lived in AK, and used to earthquakes, this was the longest and the strongest I felt. I had enough time once I figured it out to get to our DS's room.

Pentagon is evacuated, and phone lines both land and cell are over loaded.

It is not going to be a fun trip home for Bullet. I am guessing it will be at least a 3-4 hr journey because getting that many people out of the Pentagon and onto 95 or 66 at once is going to create a huge traffic jam.

It hit just about 95 miles south of the DC area.

AikiBudo,

Thanks for your update, maybe they only temp. evacuated the Pentagon and now they are all back in the building too.

Otherwise, I will just go with the assumption he will get home when he gets home!

My brother lives in Golden, CO - didn't feel it. My father lives in southern CO but I haven't spoken to him yet. Also just got a text from my MID who said they were fine as they basically live in a giant bomb shelter  They did cancel some classes as they had to evacuate temporarily.

On-line Annapolis newspaper reports the local Target store has some light fixtures and ceiling tiles fall. Pavement vibrated enough for cars to pull over and traffic lights to sway.

No news (yet) re: USNA specifically

Just talked to Bullet via cell, landlines still down. He is back in his office.

Supposedly they are saying that the Washington Monument is tilting. Union station is evacuated, so I am betting there will be problems with the Metro tonight going home and Amtrack. Parts of the ceiling in Union Station fell to the ground in the shopping/food court.

Pima - my wife works near your husband - she got to her car as fast as she could while everyone else was standing around outside the buildings to beat the traffic home!

Smart woman. Ten will get you twenty the commute will be horrific tonight. Just wondering how it will work with Union Station closed at the moment, many of the lines go through there.

Luckily our DS came home yesterday via Amtrack from NC. The train goes from Raleigh to NYC, and it arrives in Union Station at 3 p.m. See where I am going with this, trains will be clogged up the eastern corridor for hours.

Biden is lucky he is the VP now because he use to take the Acela daily from Union to Delaware.

Just coming over the news 3 of the MARC lines are suspended....many people in DC live in MD and rely on MARC. Amtrack is delayed. Traffic on the American Legion bridge is supposedly already stacked up. 395 over the 14th street bridge is being classified as a parking lot. We are only at 3, just wait until 4 - 4:30:yikes: even with HOVs it won't be pretty. The only positive is that it is August, and anyone familiar with the DC area knows people clear out this time for last vacations before school or moving kids into college.

It could have been worse. On Sunday we are to be hit with a Cat 1 Hurricane. Can you imagine if it happened on the same day as a hurricane on a workday? That would be unimagineable.

VMI

Larrys Mom was at VMI in the bookstore....she thought the Rats were on stampede but all is well there. I felt it here in Pa.

Bancroft got a healthy sway on, but for the most part everything's back to normal now.
Woke me up from my nap wondering who was shaking my rack.

I'm in TN right now....totally missed the earthquake.

Heard it happened while the President was golfing in MA....

Thank you for the clarification of in MA, because otherwise it would have been a generic statement :shake:

Napping was banned for all cadets.... resulting in 3-5 demerits (which is very minor). Doors were open from 0800-2200 unless a cadet was changing or had authorization. I was able to nap on hockey days, since we woke up at 0300 for practice.

Our Commandant of Cadets called them "Nappy-Poos." I certainly enjoyed my nappy poos on hockey days!
