so i joined AROTC this year i am an ms1 and we were not issued any equipment except the LBV, glasses,pt belt ... then they took away the LBV and told us to keep a canteen...we were also told that no cadet shall wear the uniform unless they were contracted.is this normal when previous year cadets received there uniforms before being contracted and still they continue to wear them as an ms2 but are still not contracted...it confuses me and it looks like a bowl full of empty promises i didn't sign up for a over glorified physical education class... can some one tell me if this is normal ??

Every school is different. If you want to be an Army Officer some day you will hang in there and do what you need to do. Not sure if you want to share with us which school you attend, but there may be a reason why they are doing things this way. You may have a big freshman class, and your school doesn't have enough uniforms for everyone that enrolled in the class. They may have some problems with retention, and want to make sure you are committed before they issue you a whole bunch of stuff they will have to track down when students drop the class. At Clarkson we issue all but the dress uniform to start, but we have a class of about 30 and the gear to be able to outfit that number.
I sometimes describe freshman ROTC as "gym class on steroids", so that is kind of what you signed up for at this point. It will get better.

I'm sure clarksonarmy is correct about it varying by school. I know DS's NROTC battalion issued everyone a uniform but they didn't get their dress stuff until later. I'm sure it depends on what's available and perhaps also tailoring.

RE: ROTC as "gym class on steroids", my DS is beginning to worry me. He's making statements like "PT was really fun today!" or "I can't wait until the next PT"... yet I know they're working his butt off! It must be the endorphines talking! :)

PT difficulty depends on ability group and since it is the beginning of the year they are probably still doing battalion PT.....which to those in decent shape is somewhat "a waste of time" haha

PT = 8 mile run one day (probably to sift out the ones that really don't want to be there) and 4 mile timed hike with a 45 # pack another day and he's just 2 weeks into it - DS must have not found the "fun " day. Yet he still loves it! Go figure.

No easing into it here

yesmar, is your son at one of the SMCs?

No, he is at an OOS State School. Do you think that makes a difference? He also had a deep water survival training already in full gear. The freshman class was 27 and has been cut by a few based on the rigors of the early PT. The eight mile run during the first week did a few in. He's been there 3 weeks; 2 weeks of classes; one week of intense AROTC orientation.

This just goes to show how different AROTC battalions can be in their schedules. Most will end up doing the same things, they just differ in the schedules.

My son has also been in classes for 2 weeks, they have not done CWST, Combat water survival training, that is scheduled in about 3 weeks. His class is smaller, 18 freshman so no need to weed out quite yet. The PT has been intense, 5 days a week. The Ranger Challenge team now practices their own do or die pt on Tue. and Thursday. Son made the Alpha Team so PT has stepped up a bit for him. They to have been running and ruck running a lot.

Son is at a OOS School as well, not a SMC.

Same at DD school

Patchdz,

My DD is also an MS1 (in state Private) and will not contract until next year when her 3 yr AD scholarship kicks in. She was also told that they are not distributing any uniforms or gear. She might get the PT's, but no guarantee. The CPT said it was due to the budget constraints and not getting gear back from cadets that do not contract (as mentioned above). He did say that DD could check out gear when they go on weekend training. I know DD was looking forward to her uniforms, but understands.

I hope you still find it worthwhile and worth the wait to get the equipment.

Good Luck!!
