I will be traveling with my son next month when he attends the Cadet for a Day event. Does anybody have any suggestions on hotels in New London and things to do and see at USCGA or the area while my son is busy?
Thanks.

I have only been to New London 1 time . We stayed at the Quality Inn in Groton.
It was not the nicest place in the world, but OK, and a pretty good free breakfast. it was only about 10-15 minutes to the academy. We are staying at the Red Roof Inn, in New London over parents weekend. They have a CGA rate, and are a bit closer to the academy.
Ft. Trumbull State Park in New London is kind of cool & you may be able to see Eagle there. We also visited Mystic Aquarium, which was good, and I've heard that the submarine base in Groton is good.
Have a great trip, and good luck to your candidate.

Clarion Inn at 269 N. Frontage Road, New London, CT, US, 06320, Phone: (860) 442-0631, offers a discount rate when you ask for the Coast Guard Academy family rate, and they just did a major renovation. We stayed there for R-Day and liked the new changes (used to be a Holiday Inn). It is also very close to the academy.

In addition to the other "things to do" suggestions, you may wish to visit Rocky Neck State Park about 18 minutes away on CT-156 west. For something closer, how about a walk through the Connecticut Arboretum‎
at Connecticut College (phone 860-439-5020)? Several nice ponds and easy paths to walk.

Red Roof! HAHAHA....that used to have a bad reputation at CGA....maybe that's changed.

Also known as the Red Rash Inn, lol.

Stayed their once.

Once.

The former Holiday Inn was dropped by Holiday Inn for not meeting quality standards. It has been rebranded as a Clarion and has been renovated.

The (former) Radisson downtown lost it's status as a Radisson (it is some independent name now) and has been sold and will be undergoing major renovations and rebranded as a Holiday Inn, probably sometimes between Oct-Jan.

Marriott Springhill Suites is also close by, as is a Hilton Garden Inn in Groton, a Comfort Inn and Residence Inn in Mystic, a Courtyard in Uncasville, and of course the Mohegan Sun is about 15 minutes north of the Academy, right up Rt 32.

As for what to do while you are there? Bet the Pass line, take full odds, place the 6 & 8, buy the 10, and avoid the hardways. :thumb:

Thanks for the input everybody.

I am not much of a gambler Luigi, so you will have to roll the dice for me.

Hotels

Yep... stayed at the Red Roof there once... once, when my son was up for Cadet for a Day. Since then, I tend to anchor over at the Hilton Garden Inn in Groton. Its just across the river. Easy on/off i-95 and minutes from the Academy. It cost more than RR, but the cleanliness and amenities are worth it. As for things to do while solo, Mystic seaport is a nice visit. The nuclear sub base on the other side of the river is interesting too. Both are within minutes of the Academy.

Mystic Marriot (not actually in Mystic) is very nice. Nice pull. Spent some time talking to my classmates mother in the hot tub....and was sure to mention that to him later...

Mystic has a nice little downtown to walk, the Seaport, and the Mistic Village for walking around.

Drive out to Stonington Point to see the lighthouse.

Newport RI isn't that far and has the old mansion tours. Park near Salva Regina to do the Cliff Walk behind the houses and along the waterfront.

The two casinos are within 15 minutes and have a mini-shopping mall as well as the casino areas. Check out their websites for entertainment the night you are in town.

Paul's Pasta....haha, I haven't heard or thought about that in probably 6 years!

We weren't able to go up to Mystic for Swab Summer flag ceremony, but some of our relatives went and we recommended Paul's Pasta and they loved it...maybe we'll get there this Parent's Weekend!

We did do the Sub Museum before son reported and he really enjoyed it!
