Hello All, my first post here. I have found these forums very helpful.

My question concerns the daily class schedule for Midshipmen during the academic year. The USNA site states that periods are from 8:00 am to lunch and then after lunch until 3:00 pm. (these may not be the percise times, but you get the point). I belive there are six periods overall.

My question, do Midshipmen attend all of their classes every day? Or are certain classes only on certain days?

For example, would a three credit hour class be only three days per week? Or a four credit hour class 2 periods, 2 days per week?

Any insight would be appreciated.

Classes are just as you've envisioned. Most meet a few days per week depending on the credits. Some may only meet once per week - again depending on the credit.

But unlike civilian college, I doubt you can arrange your schedule so none of your classes start before noon. :shake:

If you read the catalog, you should see classes listed as follows:

3-0-3
3-2-4

The first is number of class hours. The second is the number of lab hours. Most labs are 2 hours long. The last is the number of credit hours.

So, for a 3-0-3, you have class 3 days/week. For 3-2-4, you'd have 3 days of class and one day of lab (4 total). It's rare to have any class all 5 days in a week.

Thank you

Thank you all, i appreciate it. I wasn't able to find a clear answer on any official literature.

Knowing that you don't have the same class 5 days per week does make much more room in the schedule for studying and home work.

Realize that, although you will have SOME free time during your "free periods," it's not as much as you might think. You have other obligations that must be accomplished during that time and, given the walk to/from class, your free hour might be about 40 actual minutes.

One of the big issues at USNA is time management and prioritization.

I'm a plebe this year. there are some days when I have all 6 periods full and other days when I only have four. However, training staff can definitely give you things to occupy your "free time." But, every night there is a protected three hour study time. It is possible to manage your workload if you use the three hours wisely.

In several conversations with a relative, there is NO FREE TIME. You're running from here to there, then running back to Bancroft to change uniform, to run to the next place. then rinse and repeat... 6 uniform changes in some days. It's like a video game with mids bouncing around changing all day! If there WERE to be an anomalous free hour, it would be quickly occupied in tutoring a .. football player .. in Calculus or Chemistry or basic math :). There are lectures not to be missed, and extra curriculars that are critical to billeting aspirations, etc. No free time.

They don't do it any more but we actually had classes on Saturday mornings. Also, in those days, home football games started much earlier. We'd go to morning classes, quickly eat noon meal, form up, and march over to the stadium. When the game was over, it was still daylight and we had liberty.

Nowadays, Saturday mornings are called SMT (Saturday Morning Training). It usually just involves Plebes - and sometimes Youngsters, depending on the company.
