KP family and hospitality

I have read many times on these boards the KP family takes care of the M/N and PC's. Not even two months in and we now have first hand experience with this. My DS is with three other PC's at home of a relative of one of the boys near White Plains, NY. I believe DS said the boys great uncle ( whose home they are in) was alumni as well as another family member, their daughter I believe. This friend of DS's would make ( at least) three in their family to go to KP. To open your doors to a great-nephew and three tagalong strangers is a huge act of kindness! Not to mention an impromptu birthday celebration for my son who turned 19 yesterday. I have asked to get this families address so I can send them a card with my gratitude but I have heard this kind of thing happens all the time. So glad it looks like Irene will be behind us soon.

Taking midshipmen during the Hurricane

We have four midshipmen at our home for 5 days waiting out the hurricane. I am not writing to tell you that, as this is normal to have students. What I want to share is this. We thought that we were reaching out in love to them, and it is fun. BUT last night, in the middle of the torrential rains and high winds our electicity went out. We have a sump pump under the house on the outside. My husband brought out the generator and was using the generator to pump out the sump pump as our basement can flood very fast.

The midshipmen told us that they were going to take 3 hour watches, and use the generator every 1/2 hour to 1 hour and keep the sump pump going. They were all up most of the night, going out in the pouring rain.

This morning our basement was dry, the midshipmen were very tired, and we are VERY grateful for the love those 4 midshipmen showed us.

That is what is so great about the KP family! We also found that out when our son needed a place to stay for 2 weeks in Washington, DC for his internship. The local alumni chapter put out feelers and we got an email from a wonderful couple who both were KP grads and she actually worked at MARAD which is where our DS did his internship.

Great stories....makes me a little ashamed our DS came home. But, due to a few indiscretions, he has been on restriction for a while and viewed this as a very welcome temporary parole!

Not ashamed anymore.....after spending money we really did not have, and traveling to NY for Parent's weekend, the Administration decides (reportedly at the last minute) to NOT grant liberty to those on restriction. IF we could just get the info in a more timely manner, it would be greatly appreciated. Just make a policy and stick with it. Believe it or not, every family that has a mid at KP is not economically at the top of the heap. This could have been handled differently but who cares about parents on parent's weekend? No one if your Mid is doing time for committing the crime, it turns out.

Thanks, but, we were not alone.

DS has a good friend on the football team, parents came from California....he was on restriction too. The decision was across the board, but IMHO did come way too late........first salt in the wound was that in the past, restriction(s) were lifted/suspended for Parent's Weekend, and the second salt pouring happened when DS told us that restrictions were suspened/lifted (what ever the correct term it!) after the Coast Guard game, the following weekend.
