Plebes have not received official academy 'sweat' pants or 'A' jackets. Is this part of the general academy 'plebes must suffer a little' program or is some administrator not accomplishing a simple logistical task (uniform issue) prior to the change of seasons ?
This is a legitimate concern.

This is a legitimate concern for who?

Perhaps it's a new "Attrition through Exposure" program.

Even the weatherman can't predict the weather so expecting the supply deptartment to do the same might not be realistic. They had to do a rush issue of pea coats when I was a plebe and I'm sure there were many more times it's been done. I was definitely no fan of the uniform shop as a mid and now as a taxpayer but I'm confident they will be able to manage getting everyone outfitted in short order.

At CGA we would switch uniforms in either late Sept or Oct. I remember every time we're switch and the heat in Chase Hall would come on (took awhile for them to get the heat going in Chase)...the weather would suddenly warm up, and instead of being comfortably warm in Chase against the cold weather, we would be overheated and sweaty.

I can't remember when we were issued out winter/cold weather uniforms, but it looks like everyone will survive the current temps. We had issues with our uniform shop at CGA too. Seems like they only took inventory when cadets could actually use them and were open when no one could stop by.

Do they have their black rain jackets?

If so they'll be just fine until their issue comes in.

Although it seems like a huge deal right now it's nothing to lose sleep over, the Academy has had decades of experience. I'm pretty sure they'll be able to take care of getting the plebes their uniforms.

Cold weather gear

Fret not CW2. To misquote Einstein, "its all relative". I had a wonderful teaching assistant from Minnesota who found the tropics of Troy NY in January a bore. He didn't even bother putting on long pants until the temperature dropped below 0 F. He admitted that the flip flops were a pain if the grounds crew hadn't plowed the sidewalks before first classes. His case was a bit extreme but as my mother was from northern Wisconsin, I can attest to the fact that folks from that part of the world have a very different definition of cold!

While I'll admit a good stiff breeze blowing down the sound will wake you right up, its early yet. There are still several very nice days to come (even this far up the Hudson). That said, I think it was late September or early October when our DS got his cold weather clothing.

I remember living in Minot, ND a few years ago. It finally warmed up to 25 and girls were showing up at the mall in shorts.

What is the situation at the uniform shop> After several years wearing the same uniform it is getting a bit ragged. No uniforms to buy on campus.

it's "a legitimate concern" because they are cold!

CW2-
It IS a legitimate concern BECAUSE THEY ARE COLD!

I sent a fuzzy warm blacket to Plebe DS last month and at that time, he told me "ma, don't need that!" (I told him to put it up and don't worry about it then). Yesterday's phone conversation DS said, "Mom, THANK YOU sooOOOooOOO much for sending me that black fuzzy warm blanket last month! It's freezing at night!" I think the temps will go up and down for a few months, but I agree with you... and am hoping they get their warmer clothing soon!

Really? No option(s) to obtain a new uniform if one is needed. In four years.......Really?

Time for Moms and Dads to back off and let their wee ones grow up. If the plebes are cold, well, it won't be the last time. I would guess that some are, some aren't. It will all get taken care of. Hard for some folks to realize that the Academy is not that HS back home where some over sensitive or protective parent could charge in and force the issue. Amazing how all the mids have survived the weather at KP. I know of no mid who has either frozen to death or burned to death in the summers when there was no A/C.

But, what would I do for a daily smile if it were not for some of the posts from the plebes parents each fall?

OK, maybe being a bit "harsh" here, but it is amusing to some of us more "old timer types" how these same sort of comments creep in each year just to be long forgotten by the same parents as their mids progress through their KP years.

If you think it's cold now, try being on a container ship in January in Alaska or the North Sea. It's all relative folks...and "this too shall pass". Buck up and enjoy the ride folks. Your plebes will be Firsties before you know it, and you, too, will get a chuckle out of these type of posts. You just have to love the plebe parents. Been there...done that. Trust me, your mids will not freeze and they will, indeed, get winter gear.

True....they will be cold AND WET....and their room will rise and fall 20 ft.....

After years of living in military quarters, I am quite familiar with the vagaries of heating and cooling. It's quite common for September and April to be no heat-no cool months to save energy. I survived with young children when there was no heat and the weather turned unseasonably cold. I'm sure there is a set date when the heat will come on. Then there will be complaints that some of the decks are too hot. They survive. DD spent her first sea term in the winter off the coast of Korea with no heat in her cabin. She slept piled with clothes and blankets and wearing a knit cap.

The winter clothes will be issued on whatever day was set to issue them. The supply officer is a M/N 1C who is up to his/her eyebrows in work that can't be dropped to change the issue date. True to form, DD had a complaint on this issue too. (She's a champion complainer!) It seems that when her company has formation at 0600 in the cold, the upperclassmen can't wear their cold weather gear because the plebes haven't been issued theirs and everyone has to have the same uniform.

I don't want to sound like I'm criticizing the parents who are concerned. I used to worry about similar things during DD's plebe year. But I've learned to just let go. It's a different world there, one that even after over 20 years as an Army wife I can't begin to understand. Yes, they're cold. It may be uncomfortable, but they'll survive worse in the next 4 years. Now, tighten that seatbelt because the roller coaster ride only gets wilder as you go on.

Not unless they transfer to Annapolis.

Working aloft in January while transiting the Bering Sea made KP seem downright balmy.

When did they start having a company muster at 0600?!?! Even Plebes used to still be in bed at that hour.

Deck not up to par for inspection = early muster

Or something along those lines. I've learned not to focus too closely on these sorts of complaints and DD was focusing her complaint on wishing they'd issue the plebes their jackets so she could wear hers.

Kpengineer, I'll bite.

Oh come on, don't leave us hanging. What are your thoughts on early muster?

look elsewhere for answers-

yah, harsh and condescending.
CW2, sent you a private message... check out the parent facebook page... it's a much nicer crowd... and they actually find out the answers to the questions rather than just ***** at you and make fun of you.
