Can anyone comment on how the Midshipman/plebes are placed into a particular company? I am doubting that it is just a random placement but curious how the process works. Also, wondering if there are any known statistics on those that choose to separate from the Academy and what companies they come from. Ultimately, I am looking to see if certain companies have a higher rate of separation, voluntary or not.
Thanks in advance.

Don't get in 25....bearshark plebes hate their lives...and they never gt any sleep/study time

It is random for the most part. I am sure there is some computer program or something they use. They do obviously break up the females so there is an equal spread of them in each company. This has to do with rooming assignments also (roommates are from the same class and company). Napsters are usually pretty well spread out too. Other then that I think it is pretty random. Depending on the administration you can be "shotgunned" or "scrambled" at the end of plebe year. Shotgunned means you are once again randomly assigned to a new company. Scrambled means your whole company of plebes are re-assigned to a new company. There are different opinions about leaving plebes in the same company, shotgunning or scrambling. Just as many love the idea as they hate it. Just like anything in the military, leadership makes decisions and you roll with it. I was shotgunned and was very happy with the results.

Each company and squad has its own individual personality. The upperclassman set the tone. Some companies have the reputation of being hard or easy. It can vary just as quickly from one year to the next and one squad to the next. Also it is still early in the academic year so upperclassman are still full or energy, this usually tends to flatten out to a certain level. If upperclassman are messing with sleep/study time they are lacking in leadership themselves and firsties/company officers need to step in and correct that.

I have a friend in the bearsharks... she loves it

The bearshark propaganda machine strikes again!

Some companies have more separate than others, it all depends on the upperclass, the climate set by the company officer, or a whole host of other things. Also, some companies tend to keep conduct offenses more "in house," while others are very fry happy, which is usually detrimental to morale and can lead to higher separation numbers (voluntary or otherwise).

I don't think shotgunning is in the cards. They held the transition to 36 companies over our heads for the past three years. We got told last year that it was "totally, 100%, for sure happening" only to have it not ($$$), of course after a very nasty period where we tried to figure out who would have to leave.

It is my understanding that Company assignments are completely random. They do take into account the number of females assigned to each Company since room assignments might become a problem. As Navyhoops said. Don't think they "Shotgun"or "Scramble" any more. But it depends upon the current administration. DD did all four with the same roomates even if one did China one did France and one did Battalion Officer. Phoenix is the one!

Would be an interesting to see if any analysis could be done, for a general trend. However, it isn't in anyone's control to which company they are assigned and XX company might be "hard" one year and "easy" the next. In other words, this data really wouldn't be meaningful.
