Visit to Annapolis - Suggestions?

Tour worth it. Yes, absolutely go to an admissions session. Your junior will be put on a list and will receive periodic mailings from admissions. Take a look at the Academy's website for a calendar of events open to the public. I think that there are a couple of formal parades scheduled next month. They take place week-day afternoons if you are going during the week. Also if going during the week, there are usually noon-meal formations on Tecumseh Court at 12:10 weather permitting. Don't forget to pick up information on Summer Seminar at the admissions session.
Try to squeeze in an hour or so to drive around or do a walking tour of Annapolis. Plebes and Youngsters who have liberty from noon to midnight on Saturdays are limited to the confines of Downtown Annaplis (DTA), and the local shopping malls up to a radius of approximately 30 miles from the USNA chapel dome. It can be difficult to find transportation to museums/galleries, etc. in major metropolitan areas like DC and Baltimore, so if your child wants to be able to experience "big city life" on the weekends, it could be a challenge. Annapolis is absolutely charming -- lots of shops and restaurants, state capital of MD, etc., but it is not a major urban center. Getting off the Yard when the opportunity presents itself is a really big deal for some Mids; for others, not so much. Simply a matter of personal preference, but nevertheless a far better local environment than the other SAs. After the first two years, when upperclass have more flexibility regarding liberty, leaving the area is much easier.
Definitely take the tour (the docents do a terrific job) and try to observe a sporting event, even if it's just an intramural practice. All Mids have some sort of physical fitness activity in the late afternoon, so it will give your child a sense of daily life on the Yard.

A few more Must-See stops at USNA
Be sure to spend some time( even after taking the guided tour) in Memorial Hall , inside Bancroft Hall.....it's Hallowed Ground when it comes to US Navy and Marine Corps History... the Crypt of John Paul Jones under the NAVY Chapel is also worth more of your time....an amazing life history of the father of the US NAVY.....including how Commodore Jones' lost grave in Paris, France was finally discovered by a US Marine and his body was returned to the USA aboard a US NAVY Battleship.... During most of my visits to the Yard I try to find some time re-visiting these amazing displays and memorials, they are always worth another look to remind you how "Special" this place is.....I take the guided tour every year ( this is my 5th in a row) and still enjoy it.

They have periodic "Admissions Briefs" throughout the day.....perhaps 3 or 4. I took my daughter to visit the academy and we didn't learn of them until mid-way through our tour. Just call the admissions office to see when and if they are being offered. They're typically over in the admissions office briefing room. BTW, my daughter is currently at NAPS and will be a member of USNA Class of 2016. Go Navy!!

You always learn something new every time.This is a link to the part of the USNA admissions website where the schedule of sessions at the admissions office is posted. This session is a lecture given by an admission's office staff person, usually a recent USNA grad waiting for their next assignment. It is definitely worth it. Also, very worth it is the tour (paying but nominal) given by the visitors center.
Definitely wander around in downtown Annapolis and I highly recommend a visit to Kilwins or one of the other home made ice cream/candy shops in town!

You can find information regarding the sports programs and events at www.navysports.com It includes information regarding the sports camps. There is lots to do at USNA. Admissions briefs are 2 per morning and 2 per afternoon on weekdays, and only halfday (am) on Saturdays.
Don't expect to drive onto the Yard unless you have DOD sticker. Walk-ins currently tend to use Gate 1 (by the Halsey Fieldhouse). Visitors over age 16 will need a photo ID.
