Pima,

You made mention of "competitive state". Could you please let us know how that relates to NROTC please. What states are competitive states? Thank you!!

I won't presume to speak for PIMA but, I beleive she was referring to Competetive States for SA's. In other words, there will be more competetion for Nom's from MOC in certain states due to the high numbers of applications they receive.

I do not beleive the term Competetive States refers to NROTC or other ROTC programs.

At least for AROTC, states could be considered competive if an IS school has a top notch battalion and a lot of IS seniors apply for scholarships to that school. Makes it harder more competitive is you're OOS, especially in these tight budget times. At DS's school, of the new cadets that got scholarships from CC, he is the only OOS and it's a 3Y AD, the IS ones got either 4Y or 3Y AD.

Good point.

Both are correct.

SA's are competitive by state due to the nom process. Whereas, N/AROTC are competitive by state because of the candidate school selection process.

However, remember ROTC goes originally from a national approach and than whittles down to geographic centrist (schools). SAs start from geographic and than goes to the national level. I.E. don't win the nom, but high enough WCS you are placed in the national pool and what area you come from now plays no impact, just the WCS does.

You can see how their systems are 180 degrees different in selection, because for an ROTC they start with the national level and than bring it down to the school, hence the area now plays into it at a high level. Their only constant is the WCS.

This also explains why people don't get how a kid can get appointed to an SA, but not get a ROTC scholarship. The assumption is they were the best so they should get both. It just doesn't work that way.

You will also notice even ROTC rank is opposite than an SA. ROTC freshman for AFROTC are C100's. For AFA C1C is the equivalent of a sr. Same with AROTC they are an MSIV, but a 4 at USMA would be 1st yr.

Don't ask me why, I couldn't even begin to fathom a reason.

OBTW AFROTC would be the exception to competitive from a state since selection of school has no impact on receiving a scholarship. Scholarship are purely decided on by intended major from a national perspective using the WCS.
