A fantastic win over the Mids by our AFA Falcons.

What happened to Air Forces's defense in the second half (and OT)?

What a game.... seemed like it might be a blowout after the first half. Then it all changed second half.

I was there in my CGA poncho, with worked nicely when the rain started falling with 3 mins left.

Curse that DVR.

What an exciting game. However, I didn't get to see the overtime as I was watching it on DVR and it had stopped recording at the end of regulation play.

"Two down, four to go"

I can't tell you how many times I texted that to various people during the second half - although not in quite so polite words! I also don't understand how it seemed like there was no effort to even try to sack the Navy QB every time he threw the ball - it appeared that he could take as long as he wanted to find an open receiver without AF making any attempt to break free of blockers and try to get to him.

I was afraid that would happen and had my DVR tape the game afterwards just in case - luckily or I would have missed all the overtime too! (At least saving it for later!). We were disappointed though that they cut right to the Auburn game instead of waiting to show both academies' alma maters. And yes, I realize there are probably far more Auburn fans out there than AF/Navy combined, but it would have been a nice gesture on CBS' part.

My heart was beating so fast when they were inches from the endzone... when they got that field goal.... I jumped out of my chair!

Arnold Hall, where there were quite a few cadets watching, went absolutely crazy! We were going crazy when the defense was not making the stops and the tackles they should have. I guess that is what happens when Navy had the ball for 40 minutes of regulation time.

The best part about all of this though, is that everyone got discretionary passes for the weekend and 4*'s are at rest until ACQ Sunday night! It is a good day to be a falcon.

AF was better coached and better prepared. Navy had more heart. It was a pity that the game ended on a chickens**t call by the refs. No telling where it might have gone. Navy TOP had AF defense exhausted. Navy still hadn't figured out the AF offense. It would have been wild. We should have been able to witness it.

It would be a shame if that one penalty is what people remember about Proctor when they recall this game. But I doubt it. Proctor was OUTSTANDING in the way he put his team on his shoulders the last 10 minutes of the game and carried Navy to the tie in regulation.

Like you said, Mongo, I think Navy running nearly 100 plays in regulation time had the AF defense sucking wind by the last 5 minutes of regulation. Not sure what the special team was blocking instead of going for the ball on the on-side kick though.

All in all, what looked like a rout was going to occur turned into a Service Academy Rivalry classic! And we were all lucky to witness it. Turned to PIMA afterwards and said, "Just more proof how special service academy football is." Shame CBS changed over to the next game, because they skipped over the two teams going to each other's side to sing the school song. College football, if not the nation, can learn something from that class act.

The game wasn't decided by 1 play or call. If navy didn't go wide on the early field goal, there would have been no overtime. If there.defense wasn't confused, in the 1st half, air force wouldn't have had 21 points. And the other way too. If the ref didn't accidentally blow a whistle, air for would have has a fumble on the navy 30. And if air force didn't go prevent defense in the 4th, navy would loose by 15 points. Thats why we play 60 minutes. If u think navy lost because of 1 call, then u don't know anything about football, and are just an emotional fan. Here's the best proof.:... Nave had 41 minutes of possession. Air force had 19. Navy ran 105 plays. Air force had 47. Air force capitalized on the small time they had the ball. Navy didn't. Sorry, but 1 call did not decide this game. Just like navy letting air force score so quickly in overtime and win the game didn't do it. It was 41 minutes and 105 plays and not capitalizing that let air force win and navy lose.

I figured out what happened with the game yesterday!!!!!!!

1. The 1st half: SEC Defense Leon Panetta was on the NAVY's Sidelines, wearing a NAVY JACKET!!! The Navy team couldn't do a darn thing right the first half.

2. The 2nd half: SEC Defense Leon Panetta was on the Air Force's Sidelines and wore an Air Force JACKET!!! The Air Force started to melt down and lost a 21-3 halftime lead and almost lost the game!!!

Mr. Secretary. With all due respect. DO NOT COME TO EITHER OF OUR FOOTBALL GAMES AGAIN!!!!!

 Sorry; but that's the ONLY logical reason for the way the game played out yesterday. LOL!!! :shake:

Keeping the other team's offense off the field is how Navy stays in most games. We routinely hold the ball close to 40 minutes per game. And very often, just like this past Saturday, the opponent's defensive players get very tired about halfway through the second half.

Sorry to disagree but when two teams have battled to a tie at the end of regulation, no matter how they got there, the final result in overtime is often because of a single play. Also, you misread my post. I did not say that Navy should have won but that the official should have let the teams decide who won, not have the end result be based on some dubious call. Both teams deserved better.

And u can believe that if u want to. I believe that a football game is 60 minutes long. And air force did more with their 19 minutes of offense than navy did with 41 minutes.

I was there. The way Navy played a majority of the game....they didn't deserve to be near the ball after half time. Navy lack discipline. They had some key issues. Air Force should have beat them in regulation, but Navy had no business being in that game, and if you cut the last 4 mins out of the game, Navy wasn't in that game.

Facts of life.

I was there with a friend who was cheering for Navy, and whose father is a BGO. I'm unaffiliated (at least as far as Navy and Air Force are concerned), and Navy was not good, not at all. That said, the ending was exciting and things got interesting.

Navy lack discipline.

Certainly true of the Navy QB who clearly was taunting. His excuse was laughable:

"I got up and I was trying to run to our sideline," Proctor said. "Some guy got in my way and I just told him to move explicitly and he called it.

Not so, he ran around to the back of the AF player and started running his mouth, he deserved the penalty. The player he bumped into wasn't even near him when he was called for taunting.

Don't blame the ref for making the right call, blame the Navy QB for his lack of self control in the heat of the contest.

Congrats to Air Force, it's an easy road to keep the CinC Trophy now.

Ridiculous. Like others have said the game is 60 minutes long. The only thing that matters is the score at the end. Plenty of teams make comebacks after a disastrous first half. They adjust during halftime. I suppose you think Navy should have stayed in the locker room at half time and conceded? Good grief.
The fact that Navy hung in there and did not quit is a testament to their tenacity and fortitude. Take your plea for a 55 minutes game to the NCAA.
The call in overtime was over the top by an overzealous referee. It was unfortunate and both sides should have been permitted to play on without referee controversy.
Like said earlier - it was a terrific game save for a nasty call at the end.

JAM, for those of us who have played sports...yes, you do play a full game and anything can happen. Very good. Here's a cookie.

Navy didn't come out and own in the second half. They came out and gradually did better on their own turf. Then, they marched it down, scored, got an onside kick and scored again. Half of of their regulation scoring came in those final minutes.

But as you have so keenly pointed out, athletes play a full game.

For Mongo to suggest that Navy somehow controlled the game, or than they were the subject of one bad call that horribly ruined the game for them is laughable at best.

You play a full 60 mins, it doesn't play you. The game controlled Navy for a majority of that 60 mins.

Generally, calls are better for the home team anyway. And finally, even with the call it was WELL within range of the kicker.

At least they can look forward to beating Army.

I have to agree with Christcorp. The game is 60 minutes long. If you can make the PAT the game continues. Regardless of the penalty, that kick should have been made by Navy(it certainly was easily within the range of the Navy kicker), but it WASN'T. Don't blame the Ref for the emotional display of a player(Proctor). Emotion plays a part of every down of every game. There were plenty of calls by the ref's that went the way of Navy. Not complaining, just saying. It happens in every football game, but someone wins and someone loses. Either way it was an exciting, heart stopping game. :shake:

Don't bet on it. Watch the AF/Army game this year. There will be pushing, shoving, and taunting by both sides just like the Navy/AF game. Then watch the Army/Navy game and I will almost guarantee you that there will not be any. What is the common denominator in the games where unsportsmanlike conduct runs rampant? It's not Army and Navy. And we well know in instances like this it is most often the instigator who gets away and the rebuttal which is caught. Regardless, it is a call that needs to be made either after warnings (there were none) or in the early minutes of a game to prevent it from getting out of hand. As everyone else has stated, emotions were running high- on both sides.

Navy had more first downs, 31 compared to 19. Passing was exactly the same. Navy had over 100 more yards of rushing offense. Both sides scored exactly 28 points. How did AF do more?? And yes, ball control is the basis of Navy's game plans.

.And AF only played half a game?? Navy outscored AF in the third quarter 7-0 and in the fourth quarter 18-7. So your arguments about not playing a full game applies equally to AF in the second half as it does to Navy in the first half.

When the wind is out of the NW, there are a lot of swirls in that end of the stadium and there was wind, a lot of it. And it was raining. A 35 yarder in those conditions was definitely not a gimmee.

Calls for the home team?? For Independents, the visiting team brings the referees. AF brought the Big 12. It almost seems they were courting each other. I never saw one call go Navy's way all day. We probably lost 20 yds of rushing to ball spotting alone.
