Congratulations! I expect the board will start lighting up!

Our daughter was notified of her NROTC scholarship via the website today. She is so thrilled and I'm super relieved.

Agent, I'm so happy for you! Are you applying early to Harvard? That would be amazing for you.

Woohoo! Son was also notified on the website of a 4 year Aeronautical Engineering Major Scholarship at Embry Riddle!!

To quote Darth Vader in Epsode V of "Star Wars"... "IMpressive. Most impressive"!

Congrats to all!

All the very best...

Congrats... All the very best to you and any other that get the call. I just got a call from my kid the web site was updated but I don't think he got the first call.

Congrats to all of you, I still remember those days and as excited our DS was, I think his father and I were more excited because we could finally breathe again!

For those still waiting, understand that this is not a NO, what occurs is that the 1st board is where they get the 1st look of incoming candidates. They will know from a historic POV that some of these kids regardless of how many come in would have been offered a scholarship against LY's candidate pool.

It will not nor does not reflect their success in ROTC. Not trying to burst the balloon of those accepted, I am just saying that it is like the EA for a college, some kids get deferred to a later decision, but that doesn't mean they will not be there next yr, nor that they can't graduate Summa Cum Laude.

They cannot and will not hand out the entire pot of gold on the 1st board if applications are not closed. They will continue to review the pool. LY there were cadets that got the scholarship even though they were re-boarded.

Again, to the candidates...now get your DoDMERB paperwork in order, and wrap yourself up in bubble wrap...no more skiing/snowboarding the black diamond trails! Also be smart...no speeding tickets, no plagarizing, no driving in a car with a kid that had just 1 beer, even though you didn't imbibe. In other words keep your nose clean!

Good luck, congrats, enjoy your sr. yr.

Yes, congratulations to each of you.

God Bless, God Speed and Good luck,

RGK

If you were offered a scholarship after the first board would your portal reflect that decision now, or are they perhaps still updating individual profiles at this time and the results are just not uploaded yet?

Thanks!

Yes, it takes time for the portal to reflect the update.

Many are also finding out via the relationship between their CO or BGO. DO NOT READ INTO THAT. Some CO/BGO's opt to be the person to relay the info, some opt to allow the traditional route of NROTC notifying the candidate.

The fat lady will not sing until April, don't get wrapped up right now. Deep breaths.

As hard as it is to read this life of boards is just beginning, and as much as you think it is a make or break, every board after this is more make or break.

Honestly, I wish people told me that. AFROTC posters on this forum is small, because AFROTC is the smallest branch. However, through the yrs on this forum I have learned it is still the same. Scholarship/No Scholarship means squat when they report. Cadets/Mids do not discuss it, boards do not take that into consideration for career assignments. The slate is wiped clean. It is what they do as a cadet/Mid that makes or breaks them, not where the money comes from for the Bursar's office.

If it is about attending a college for fiscal reasons, which for many; is the pure truth, we all get it. Understand this is not about paying for school, this is about serving in the military, and the scholarship is just a perk. That is how every ROTC unit will view every person in the unit.

Sometimes it takes the person with an outside perspective to remind people the big picture that is being viewed.

My son received an ISR, but his portal still shows things as if they just received his application. He was concerned and contacted both his CO and his recruiting lead officer. They both assured him that he is "locked in" and it is just a matter of more pressing issues on their end than updating his portal. They have another ISR recipient in the same boat.

I guess we all just need to keep the faith.

P.S. The ISR is just what it says, a scholarship reservation. The scholarship is exactly the same 4-year scholarship as those who are boarded. Same rules (5 schools); no preferential treatment other than early notification.

P.P.S. I really don't see how a NROTC scholarship recipient can go through a binding early decision process; because there is no guarantee that you will be assigned to that school's unit. (They told my son they do try to give preference by ranked choice, but there is a lot of Navy pressure to get in-state tuition as much as possible, for obvious reasons.) So I'm curious as to how the OP already knows it will be Harvard and an apparent Tier 3 scholarship (East Asian Studies)? But, seriously, congratulations!

Received a notice today on the status page!!! I got it!!

Well, OP knows that the NROTC scholarship is awarded for USE at Harvard. OP does not know if DS will gain admission to Harvard, so in the 93% chance that OP does not get into Harvard on Apr. 1 (H accepts 7% of applicants) OP on Apr. 1 would need to petition NETC to transfer the scholarship for use at another Unit.

dunninla is correct.

They have the scholarship to Harvard via NROTC, but they do not have an acceptance to Harvard.

That's cool. My son's NROTC scholarship isn't to any particular unit; he has to get in to one of his selected five schools. I've never been clear on how this works. Does he ask for a certain unit once he gains admission? Or is the assignment automatic?

Surprised that so many people are already listing units, unless they are just listing their favorites. Many universities have barely opened their application processes. I do know there are a few with rolling admissions, but that seems to be more the exception than the rule.

Candidad,

I don't know about the ISR process but the normal process is that the scholarship is awarded for 1 of the 5 schools on their list (NROTC anyway). The student has to then be accepted by that college separately. That's why those who have received their scholarship via the seleciton boards already know their units.

ISR might follow the same process except your DS doesn't need to go through the selection board... or, if you're lucky there may even be more choice about the school in your case. Let us know what the process is once you've found out.

I would also add that if the OP wants to use the scholarship in any case at a more popular unit, that she put her name on a wait list as soon as possible for a backup school. The MIT/Harvard unit pretty much never fills from what we were told, but if she doesn't get into Harvard and would instead be looking at a school like Embry Riddle or Notre Dame or similar, those would be long full by April. Actually I'd recommend transferring it as soon as possible (if possible - it wasn't last year, but we were told this year would be different) to her Plan B ("safety") school and switching back later once accepted. If she applied EA to Harvard (don't they just have EA, not ED - meaning not binding?) and would know by December, I might wait until then to try to get on a wait list, but certainly no longer. Sounds like she's a recruited athlete as well, which may be why she has more confidence, but I don't know how much that helps at a school like Harvard (as opposed to an academy).

Congrats to your daughter! I am indeed applying early; hoping for better odds in the SCEA round, but it's coin-flip either way.

I actually might have an answer on that front by the wintertime, since the decisions for early action applicants are released on December 15. Thankfully, I've got National Merit to lean on for some assurance with regard to my safety school, so I can take the initial risk if need be. I'm also applying to three other schools with traditionally underpopulated NROTC detachments. Nothing is certain, but I'm hopeful

From what I was told, ISR applications go to the board to be confirmed/processed. On the phone, I was informed that my scholarship had been confirmed for a Tier 3 major and that I had a space at the MIT detachment. I should be meeting with a rep in a few days, so I should have a bit more insight on that front in a short while.
