I haven't looked much into VMI, but recently I have and it seems quiet great! Yet, I'd prefer to have some more direct insight on VMI from maybe parents, or students themselves on how it is and possibly relates to the Service Academies and the other Senior Military Colleges.

Thanks!

Hey Cisco. My DS is a Rat at VMI. He picked it over all the other SMC after missing the final cut at the Naval Academy (he had a senatorial nomination). There is a ton of material about VMI out there in this forum and elsewhere. Academically, Forbes ranks VMI at 65 among all US colleges. http://www.forbes.com/top-colleges/list/

US New & World Report ranks it at 4 among all public liberal arts colleges, right after the 3 SAs, number 71 among all national liberal arts colleges, public and private. http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/virginia-military-institute-3753 VMI has a unique culture and traditions all its own, different from the SAs and the other SMCs. To get it in depth view from an insider, buy and read Stewart W. Husted The Hard Corps, 21st Century Leadership Development. It is at Amazon.com. VMI is definitely not a college for everyone. None of the SMCs are.

Thank you. How are the Academics and "regular" scheduel for a Cadet?

Best to gauge that is spend a night there as a pre-strain and talk directly to the cadets. You can DL from the VMI website their Handbook for New Cadets and check out the academic offerings on line. The majors are limited in number but they do very well at what they offer. YMMV. IMHO, the academics at VMI are first rate.

A typical schedule:

wake up and go to your dykes room by 0640 and roll their hays.
BRC formation at 0650
Classes from 0800-1600
Then non-NCAA rats have Rat Challenge (obstacle courses etc.) and NCAA have practice.
SRC formation is at 1900.
After you are released from SRC by cadre you study until Taps
Taps is at 2330.

and repeat :) Its an extremely busy day. But if you learn how to balance your time effectively you will not run into toooo many problems.

That seems to be the general jist of it--little variation from my DS such as today he puts his dykes' hay up at noon; plus he has room duty this week (meaning he is responsible for keeping the barracks room up to inspection) and he had to do push last night (something to do with one of his barrack mates doing something bad so they all had to do push)...he wasn't so thrilled with that
