I must say that reading the messages on this forum sure makes me feel bad for this years scholarship hopefuls. My son is one of them..In any other year he would be a shoe-in and now it does not look good. To bad the hopes and dreams were built on other years numbers. On the other hand, I am sure happy that there is a plan B and C and that my DS will be involved in the ROTC regardless of a scholarship offer. It pays to plan ahead! Thanks for the gread reading and sound advice-who knows maybe the check is in the mail!

Should have been here 8 years ago (wonder if here was even here). We were given one scholarship that year. It's all relative. Glad you have a B & C too.

Don't be discouraged by all the postings. AROTC really does base their selections on the whole person. Last year there were applicants that did not have stellar academics but were heavy in leadership and athletics which carried them to a scholarship. The interview and recommendations from the PMS helps a lot as well. A well balanced application seemed to do well last year, not saying it won't be more competitive this year. Another factor seems to be school selections, if the applicant is only applying to very competitive schools then it may be tougher to secure a scholarship, having a couple in state school toward the top of the list will help as well since there seems to be a shift to public and in state schools this year.

So hang in there, it's a long process and won't be over until around May of next year. It's good to have plan B & C & even more, remember the majority of cadets are not on scholarship and the path to commissioning is all the same.

Best of luck.

In addition to jcleppe's post, which is right on the money, don't forget to look for other (merit, need, best essay in X) scholarships. I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir and that its already in plans A, B AND C, but it never hurts to repeat it. That's what made my kid's #1 school/battalion choice possible. :thumb:

Yes, it looks very competitive for 2016 ROTC across the boards...but the answer is guaranteed NO if you don't apply and ride the ride:wink:

Having a strong Plan B-Z is a MUST - agree with kinnem completely, DS would not be at his #1 choice if he hadn't followed up with merit and every other scholarship opportunity available, including SMP with the Guard.

The thread about the letter from a battalion is developing an interesting twist on how it isn't just about scholarship and contracting - its the actual commission that is the prize and those numbers are shrinking too. Will have some long conversations with DS over Thanksgiving/Christmas break(he's home for 6 weeks:biggrin:).

Continue hanging out with all the other 2016 parents and applicants -- news will break here fast when the 1st AROTC boards release the results and the the January and March as well. Your friends and family might not "get it" so all of us are here:thumb:

thanks all, the DS is very well rounded, 3.55, 28, ACT, eagle scout, starting varisty football, wrestling, track--200 on his interview. He is accepted to 6 schools with scholarships ranging up to half. We have the funding. He will be in ROTC. The scholarship will/would of been a great acknowledgement of his efforts so far. His second school is a public school. All bases should be covered. Who knows, the check still could be in the mail.
