Summer 2012 Training Opportunities

Marist, thank you for the post about summer training.

Cadet Delahanty informs me he has submitted his application for CULP, and I am wondering if you can shed some light on the following:

1) Does an interim Brigade-wide OML get created to evaluate CULP applicants or is the OML simply on a battalion basis?

2) Are the CULP assignments (455 in 2011) distributed among the brigades pro rata according to the number of cadets in the brigade? Some other method?

3) Are the CULP participants all deployed on a single date? A series of dates depending on the destination?

4) Cadet Delahanty is also hoping to attend Airborne School this summer. Is this possible?

By the way, I was impressed by the Marist ROTC website and even more so by the program it describes, including Operation 24.

2) Great question
3)No, there are different dates for different trips. Sometimes trips go to the same place, but at different times. For example, there are two trips to China this summer, but the dates are different.
4)I don't know about your son's battalion, but generally no. In my battalion, even the top cadet in our class has to choose between airborne and CULP.

I've seen a few cadets get double stacked (ABN and Air Assault) and go to LDAC in one summer (or MS II year) however these guys were absolute studs. Usually you can try to get one training session a summer in order to spread the wealth around the batt. He will have to choose ABN or CULP because the opportunity probably won't come again.

This raises a timing question if a choice must be made. How long after the December 15 CULP notifications do cadets have to accept the appointment?
I think summer assignments for Airborne don't get made until a bit later.

We placed GPA and APFT standards that Cadets had to meet in order to apply for Summer Training, but did not create a BN OML.

There was no restriction on attending CULP and another training program. 3 of our Cadets were selected for CULP and Airborne.

Many programs allocate the majority of their Summer Training slots to MSIIs. Cadre are unwilling to give a slot to MSIs if they are not certain that the Cadet is strong enough and mature enough to complete the training. MSIIIs have to fit LDAC into their Summer.

I guess it just depends on the batt then, we have a BN OML training slots are chosen by. If no one wants the training you can double up. Ya MSII seems to be the best year because of LDAC/MSIII and they never give MSIVs slots...or at least that's what cadre say.
 
My son is an MS I. He wants to do airborne/air assault and CULP next summer. He was told that it's highly unlikely that he will get airborne or air assault since they are not likely at all to give the slot an MS I. Is CULP a still possibility for MS I ?

In terms of his standing at the battalion, the fact that he made it to the ranger challenger alpha team speaks a volume. He is also the only 4 year scholarship cadet from his school. His PFT score was highest among the MS I cadets, and his GPA should be up there based on all indications.

Culp is available to MS1's. If he hasn't started the application he will need to start soon, the deadline is the beginning of November...the 4th I believe. Once the application is complete the PMS will review the cadet to give his recommendations and complete the application process. The applicant will also need to complete his security clearance as well. I'm not sure how other battalions do it but for my son's the PMS sent out an email to only the cadets he wanted to apply. Only the applications that have the PMS recommendation will have there applications submitted to the Brigade, at least that's the way son's battalion works.

Have your son contact his battalion HR person about the application process, tell him not to wait too long.

I agree, it is highly unlikely he would be sent to Airborne or Air Assault.

yes he is. he passed PFT as soon as they let him, and is merrily drawing the $10/day stipend :biggrin:

This probably depends on the batt, but every year at my school the best MSI is usually offered an airborne slot. Airborne seems to be a lot easier to get (relatively) then say AAS or even the rare Mountain Warfare or Combat Diver schools. I've heard they only give one combat diver slot per brigade in the past.

Funny how I was just hearing from my friend's dad that they offered Ranger school as an option rather than going to LDAC (or Camp Adventure as it was called). I wonder what the cadet pass rate after peer evals would be? haha
