I know that if you are awarded a scholarship, CC will inform you, of the colleges that you have listed, can the scholarship be used at. You have 30 days to accept or decline. At the 30 day limit, do you tell CC what college you are going to go to also? Just thinking that one school will not inform us untill Dec. 16th. Could be a conflict if DS is lucky enough to be awarded a scholarship. thanks all.

The scholarship is awarded to a "particular" school on the list. So that's where you go.... or PERHAPS try to transfer it which isn't guaranteed and probably not very likely. Sometimes the scholarship gets awarded to a school you didn't even apply to and wasn't on your list. Although this is rare, it does sometime happen on a late scholarship award when the schools on your list are already full. In this case they'll work with you on getting it transferred or getting you into that school. Hope this answers your questions in that regard.

BTW, you're right that award of scholarship may not work out with school notifications of acceptance. In that case I'd give the school admissions office a call and let them know what's going on. Perhaps they'll work with you. ROTC is notoriously slow in getting out the scholarship acceptance notifications though, so its probably not going to come up as an issue. Do not be surprised if you don't hear one way or the other on the ROTC scholarship until April in the case of an award by one of the later boards.

Its terrible waiting, I know. But you have to hang in there and push your plan B and C and D in parallel. In the meantime pursue merit scholarships, etc.

And BTW, you didn't mention which branch. If its AFROTC the scholarship is awarded to you and you pick the school. I don't know when you have to notify them of which school but there are plenty of AFROTC parents and cadets on the forum who will jump in I'm sure.

If you receive an Army ROTC scholarship, and you choose a school that you don't get into you will have to request a transfer of your scholarship. Part of that process is submitting an acceptance letter from the school you have chosen. Additionally, if you receive an offer and it is to a school that still as AD/ED open you should probably do change your application to AD/ED if your offer is to the school you want to attend.

He is going for AROTC and he has been accepted to 6 of the schools already. It just hit us the other day that knowing how luck is, the one school he has not heard from yet will be one of the schools they tell him he can go to. Of course this school is the favorite. Plan b-z is just waiting to be put into effect if plan "a" doesnt work out. The part of being in limbo and not just forging ahead is the hardest part.

As Clarkson has mentioned in the past it is impossible to compare last year to this year in regard to scholarships. That being said I can only tell you what happened for my son last year.

Son was board ready for the first board in Oct. The results from that board started coming out around Nov. 15th, he received his letter dated Nov. 19th. Son had until Dec. 19th to make his selection. Son was awarded the scholarship to 5 schools, later boards last year awarded fewer schools. This year they will most likely award scholarships to fewer schools and more in state public schools.

If the notification date is similar to last year for the first board you just might make it by the Dec. 16th date you mentioned above.

Good luck to your son.

mgguy,

Good news is that if your DS is offered a scholarship to one of the 6 schools he's been accepted at (although sounds like not his #1 choice and still waiting to hear back), I think he's ahead of the curve. At least you both have a pretty good foundation to start making a decision on, and as kinnem pointed out, if it's with the school your DS is still waiting to hear from, be proactive. I have a DD who is only a junior and she's already getting bombarded with college info. So, in these tough economic times, I think that prospective freshmen have a leg up. Comminicate, because the worst question is the one that's never asked, the answer will always be "NO".

Best of luck to your DS and you as well, it's just the beginning of a next leg in both of your live's journey.
