My son is in the process of interviewing with his MOCs for a MOC nomination when we got his medical DQ letter:frown:. Assuming a waiver is requested to DODMERB, what will happen if he gets nominated by MOC while his waiver is being processed?

Would he be not considered for appointment because he is temporarily DQed?

Or, would they note that he is currently in the waiver process and wait for the results of the waiver request to come back before giving out appointment?

An appointment won't be given to a "DQ" candidate. HOWEVER...a candidate that is a STRONG candidate (i.e., one that the academy thinks might qualify for an appointment) will be submitted by the academy for a waiver IF the DQ condition is waiverable. Not all of them are.

Being submitted for a waiver does NOT mean that an appointment is coming, it simply means that the academy "thinks" that there is a possibility.

Nothing will happen. At least nothing as far as an appointment. FYI - DODMERB issued the "qualified/disqualified" decision, the individual academies make the waiver decisions.

Would he be not considered for appointment because he is temporarily DQed?

All candidates must be qualified medically, physically, and scholastically to receive an appointment. The academy could offer a conditional appointment while waiting for his medical status to be settled, but more than likely nothing will happen until the results of the waiver request are known.

Or, would they note that he is currently in the waiver process and wait for the results of the waiver request to come back before giving out appointment?

That is the likely scenario, yes.

nothing will happen

So if "nothing will happen", that means that all 10 nominees will be waiting on the results of a waiver if #1 nominee is in the waiver process?

It is my understanding that the boards do not have the DoDMERB information. When I sat on a Congressional board I did not have insight as to a candidate's CFA score or their medical status.
Last year I had a SA candidate who was given a Senator's nom. Unbeknownst to the Senator's board during the interview the candidate had already been academically DQ'd (I phoned the Senator's office to ask why the nom had been given to an academically DQ'd candid and was pretty much told that it was "none of my business." ) That was a waste of a nom!

Understood. We are proceeding with MOC nomination interviews. However, the question deals with what happens at the SA selection process when the SA needs to select an appointee from among a list of nominees, one of which is temporarily DQed.

Last year DS was notified by one MOC that he would not receive a nomination from him. However two months later he was notified that a vacancy had developed and that he was receiving a nomination. We assumed that someone got DQed and the Academy requested another candidate from the MOC to fill the slate. Not sure if this was the result of a DQ, but clearly candidates were being added to the MOCs slate late in the game.

USNA specific-don't know about the rest. If the DQed nominee is either the principal nominee or the most competitive, Admissions will hold the slot until the results of a waiver is determined. This is one of the many reasons many do not find out about appointments well into May.

It's my understanding that this is the same for USAFA.

Thanks for the answer...and that's good news since we're subject to the DODMERB process which is unpredictable time-wise.
