When do you choose if you want to go into active duty military service or into civilian service during the 4 years at KP?

Not positive but believe when a midshipman at the USMMA must request a change in status from USNR to any other service or to go active duty Navy varies depending on what it is they are looking to do and what service they want to change to. It may also vary slightly from year to year. There are representatives from each service on campus for them to work with and seek advice from as they go through the process though. Also just like everyplace else, just because they are requesting something doesn't mena they will get it.

Everyone who graduates become a commissioned officer no matter what. But depending on what branch you choose you can apply to multiple and pick which branch you want to go into senior year. Or if you want to do both you can get a civilian job and be a drilling navy reservist.

Not everyone gets a branch they want. We had a KPer on my first my first year out, applied to join the Coast Guard but wasn't selected. It's too bad, because I think he would have been a good pick.

Can you do say a year working on ship after you graduate then choose to go active?
