Max pushups,pullups,crunches, 8.0 shuttle,70bb throw,5.59 mile.
Are these competetive?

good job! :thumb: But it does seem like you were trolling for a compliment:thumbdown:

If you looked at the averages posted in the sticky section, you will see what I meant

No trolling- I saw posted somewhere that if you havnt maxed out you should
retake the test. I felt good about my scores just wanted some confirmation.
Now just have to survive the CRC and nomination interviews.

As I've said many times, I had a son who did TWO pull-ups at NASS and ended up getting an LOA. That's how important the CFA is.

haha, and my son ran the mile in over 8 minutes....early appointment to USNA in October, now a happy M3C!

There are tales of candidates with lower than average CFA scores receiving appointments. And, they're true.

However, with an increasing number of qualified candidates in the applicant pool, it makes sense to do everything you can to improve your odds. Doing extremely well on the CFA is of increasing importance.

That said, please use common sense. There is a difference b/t max crunches minus one vs. max minus 25. Or a 5:50 mile vs. an 8:00 mile. If you didn't max out in anything and your scores are just average across the board, it may well benefit you to retake the CFA. If your score is at or near the max for all events, retaking is unlikely to help.

Advice

Looking for advice...
My DS has been told he is 3Q so scores meet a "pass" but he is not sure if he should try and retake

Basketball throw - 81 ft
Pull Ups -16
Shuttle Run 8.9ft
Sit-up 95 (max)
Push up- 68
Mile run 6:49

His guess is he may be able to shave off a 10-15 sec on run, in low 70's for pushup and maybe 1 more pull-up. He was happy with his scores when submitted but now after reading CFA threads is not sure... Would minor improvements like above help at all or should he be content. He doesn't think he can do much better but maybe a little...

He does have a lot of athletic participation- 2 varsity letters (fball and XC), 2 years JV baseball, 2 yrs JV fball, active in competitive snowboard and mountain biking club, 1 year of club water polo, active in fitness triathlons ....

We are on our way to CVW tomorrow so may try and ask about this there as well but not sure if we will have an opportunity.

Thanks for any feedback.

Those scores look good. The mile could be a tad better -- sub 6:30 would be great.

crair: Personally, I'd say your DS is "Good to Go"

(First time my Mid said, "GTG" to me, I said, "What?????" she said, "Good to go, Mom." - With implied "Duh" tacked on the end)

I ran a 7:14 mile and still received an LOA. My plan was to retake it;that has now changed. At NASS we were told situp-ups, push-ups, and the mile run were the most important parts (at least for USNA).

While you don't need to retake the CFA, if you're a male, you want to improve your run times before plebe summer. A male should be able to run several miles at a 6:30-6:45 pace. A female about a minute slower.

If you can't do that, you'll struggle mightily plebe summer. Trust me on this one.

After a season as a noob in cross country, I managed to cruise a 6:25 during a PT day in JROTC(without kicking on the last lap). I run about 22 minutes for 3.1 miles.

Would it be more productive to prepare for plebe summer by training to run longer distances (over 6 miles) or simply run faster for 3 miles?

I'll defer to a more recent plebe than I on this.

In my day, runs of greater than 3 miles were extremely rare. I believe they are a bit more common today and also that the longer runs come later in the summer. Thus, I suspect that if you can maintain a good pace over 3 miles, you'll build your endurance over the course of the summer and will be fine in the longer runs.

The bottom line for all candidates: just b/c you "passed" your CFA doesn't ensure you're in shape for plebe summer. You have plenty of time. Do NOT show up out of shape as your summer will be miserable. And, the run is the hardest area in which to make quick improvements.

Check with a coach or a trainer and get yourself on a manageable long-term workout program. Don't wait until April to start. If you start now, by the time July rolls around, daily workouts and running will be the norm and you'll be fine during PEP. It will still be a challenge -- but you'll be generally comfortable with the requirements.
