COLUMBIA, S.C. — After a four-year hiatus, The Citadel and VMI are renewing the Military Classic of the South.

The game between the state military colleges of South Carolina and Virginia got tougher to schedule after the Keydets moved to the Big South Conference, but it’s back for the next several years. Perhaps no two teams in the South understand each other better, as they both deal with the regimented discipline and the rigorous training required at their schools.....

Good luck guys- I hope today is a good game for both teams. Bird85 & btexino- I hate seeing families divided like this. I hope your sons are gentle on you at the end of the game  (I heard you guys are rooting for the "keydogs"?)
go Keydets!

The Military Classic of the South will be taken to a whole new level this weekend. Not only will they be playing the traditional football game, but the Keydets are invading Charleston as they also challenge El Cid in both men's and women's rugby.

LET'S GOOOO, Keydets!!!

So bird85 and btexinot are citadel alums but allowed their offspring to go to vmi? How did that happen?? I mean how could they ever show up at another citadel function?

We aren't the only two, there are several others. I meet more Citadel Dads each time I go to VMI! :thumb:

True about the rugby, and good job, but the football score is worth a look. Just saying! Go Bulldogs!

As the old saying goes, "Truth is stranger than fiction."

With 2:53 left in the 4th quarter, it's Bulldogs 41, Keydets 7.

Go KeyDOGS!! (Still trying to keep peace in the family.)

41-14 Citadel! I'm a happy knob mom, especially since I won't have to listen to a cranky knob.

Ahh well- that wasn't really all that hard to predict. This has been a very ugly football season so far for VMI. But as the VMI Spirit says " never say die. That's the Spirit of VMI". Now that they have started up the rivalry again- there's always next year in Lexington.

I love football rivalrys  so will have to start planning for next years game!! :thumb:

Citadel-VMI is still a great rivalry and I hope it keeps going. It would be really nice if the game next year in Lexington is on Parents Weekend, (too much to hope for, no doubt), in which case I'd sit on both sides of the field, changing sides at halftime. :thumb:

My son was supposed to travel with the VMI contingent to Charleston for the game today, and I expected to get text messages from him letting me know he had arrived at the "Charleston city dump", or something of that nature. But, I haven't heard from him at all today. If I find out he slept in this morning and missed the early morning bus, I'll certainly give him a few "bones" of my own. :yllol:

It is always nice to win. Congratulations Bulldogs!! It is good that VMI and The Citadel have scheduled games again. Two proud schools with much in common.

I can't imagine intentionally missing the bus from gray and rainy Lexington to warm and pretty Charleston, SC. I bet your DS is just enjoying the change in environment too much to text you.

The Citadel dominates

The Citadel dominated every aspect of the game and seems to be developing a very strong program. They managed a really strong come back against App State last week. Go Dawgs!

I'm surprised it was such an uneven score. Given the similarities of the schools, I would think it would be as difficult to recruit for The Citadel as it is for VMI. I suppose Citadel's location makes it more appealing to interested people. Also, Citadel is in the Southern Conference, and that might attract a player more than the Big South of VMI (when I was a cadet, VMI was also in the Southern Conference and we beat The Citadel at least once in my four years).

Weird.

The VMI Women's Rugby team also had a strong showing today, taking the W with a final count of 44-0! Way to go, Keydets!!!

I think there's one more round in the VMI vs. The Citadel extravaganza this weekend, with club lacrosse this evening.

Finally heard from DS this morning and he said the bus trip from VMI to the Citadel game was cancelled for "lack of interest." Man, that's kind of sad!

A quick check of Wikipedia indicates VMI was in the Southern Conference from 1924 to 2003, 79 years! That's the longest run of any school ever to be in the SoCon. The Citadel and Furman joined in 1936 and are still in the conference, but that's only a mere 75 years.

During my 4 years in Charleston the Bulldogs won 2 and the Keydets won 2, so that shows how competitive and balanced things were back then, when they played with fellow conference members West Virginia, East Carolina, Richmond, and William & Mary. But the times they sure have a'changed. The Citadel will play the nationally ranked University of South Carolina Gamecocks in a couple of weeks - - I just can't wait to see how THAT turns out. :frown:

Although the powers that be will surely argue against it, I'll stick my neck out and say the Bulldogs and Keydets should move down to NCAA Division-II.

P.S. Speaking of West Virginia, if there are any Mountaineers out there, greetings from the land of Jayhawks and Wildcats and WELCOME TO THE BIG 12!

"Although the powers that be will surely argue against it, I'll stick my neck out and say the Bulldogs and Keydets should move down to NCAA Division-II."

Why? Then our competitive basketball program that beat Kentucky a few years ago also has to go to D-II and complete irrelevance.

Also, then the Citadel's historically very successful baseball program does as well.

Both VMI and the Citadel have a long and proud history in D-1 athletics. The willingness to give up among certain segments of alumni just blows me away.
