DD called to say that in her Battalion, Branching decisions were learned by the MSIVs. It's kind of interesting to see how MSIs are learning about this critical process from the MSIVs. Turns out I've given WAY more thought to that process, including the OML, than she has. Three of the eight she heard about got Infantry, and one who wanted Infantry got Armor. Not sure what the other four got b/c she didn't mention. I believe she called me b/c earlier I had told her that Infantry is hard to get (well, impossible for a female, as are all Combat Arms Branchings). Seems two of the MSIIs in her Battalion are also talking about quitting college and ROTC and enlisting Infantry. She didn't say why, but I suspect they don't want to wait until they're commissioned and we're possibly completely out of Afganistan -- they want to get some action NOW.

Ya we all got ours today...4-5 infantry, a handful of Air Defense, Ordinance and MI (bunch of others but less grouped). We even had a finance with branch detail.

Ya I have seen that happen quite a few times, usually a few Frosh/Sophs who want to enlist the infantry. Personally I think it is a terrible decision to throw away a 4-year scholarship for such a fleeting opportunity with few returns in the overall spectrum of a career. However, they were adults and that was their decision. I can get them on the phone with some of buddies in Afghanistan and they can throw in their 2 cents at them...most would push for them to stay in school.

DS is excited for the MSIVs today is their day too! He didn't say what branches, just that there was a lot of hooping and hollerin' coming from them all day:smile:

Several MSIs are considering leaving college already at his school too. Some are truly not prepared for college level work but most are SMP and want to go active before the "action is over". There are 2 Green/Gold MSIIIs trying to talk some sense into them but as Aglahad stated, ultimately they are adults and will make their own decision.

Congrats to everyone, and my very best wishes.

DS received his first choice: Military Intelligence.
He was very excited last night!!!

Do they also find out where they Detail? The normal thing (I've only learned from reading this) that an MI Branched 2LT usually first Details, that is, is lent to another Branch, for the first year or two or three. Therefore: MI with Infantry Detail, or Signal with Armor Detail, etc.

See page 6 of this powerpoint:

thanka Agla.

SingaporeMom -- what did your son get for Detail? Or was he top 10% and didn't need to Detail, or part of the 35% of MI that doesn't get lent out?

Sure looks like a black N to me.

No aviation slots? Ah, I guess they'll all be USMA grads.

We had one Aviation and for some reason scout a lot of people are banking on getting G7J for MSC...

Not all of them are impossible for females. We had a female cadet who commissioned in May get a Field Artillery detail. Probably one of the very few(and also pretty restrictive).

My BN had a lot of MI branchings. All of them had combat arms details. We had a couple or so get Infantry. One unique one I heard about was a Transportation branch detail Armor.

They are still crossing the T's and dotting the I's, hopefully he will get the word soon for Aviation....long story, I'll fill you in if it all turns out.

Incorrect for several reasons.

First and foremost, there is no such animal as Combat Arms. Two years ago, the Army discontinued the use of combat arms. The branches are now grouped into

Manueuver, Fires & Effects

Operations Support Division

Force Sustainment Division

Aviation is in MFE. D

Back when branches were divided in Combat Arms, Combat Support, and Combat Service Support, aviation was a combat arm.

So was ADA. And FA. Women could and can branch into all three.

Do they allow women on the gun lines? From what I understand women in FA are usually in the HHC or some meteorological unit

Infantry

Infantry. It has been his dream. A lot of hard work. Thanks Norwich University and Norwich University Army ROTC.

I think I'm on a strictly need to know basis. :unhappy: I do know that at branch night there was no mention of a detail...would that mean he's straight up or would the detail follow? he requested straight up.

Just sms'd DS and he confirmed that he was not informed of a detail.

I got a very excited phone call 7 minutes after he opened the envelope...and it all came out in what would be a cross between a speed talker and a very loud HOOOAH!!!

and with all of the acronyms, i understood about 33% of what he said!!

Congrats to all

Wish you all the best. Allthough, I think the hard part is only now starting.
