Concerned on where I stand

Hey guys, new to the forums, and gee I wish I'd discovered this resource a lot earlier. After clicking around, I became concerned as to where I stand. I see some LOA threads, and one of my classmates brags about his LOA for West Point almost every day. My package is coming along, but my theory is that my missing CFA is probably hurting me. Should I worry?

My stats:
GPA: Unweighted- 4.0 Weighted- 4.45
Rank: 5 of 600
SAT: 680 Reading 650 Math (retaking it Dec)
ACT: 35 Reading 33 Math
PSAT: 202 (National Merit Commended Scholar)
Various APs and honors classes, 5s on exams
Drum Major, 2010-2012
President of National Honor Society
5 levels of French study
Lots of clubs and volunteering
Presidential nom- granted one interview with senator, still very upset I couldn't make it. Chances are good I will have interviews with the other senator and the congressman soon.

I'm taking my CFA tomorrow, my physics teacher excused me to go take care of it in the gym. I have the numbers I'm aiming for for the six events, but does anyone have any tips?

Am I in good shape?

Also, not sure how much this matters, but my B&GO called me up a little while ago to tell me I was board qualified, since all that's missing is my CFA. Just by the by.

Thanks!

Academic wise I would say you're solid, but what do you do for physical activity? I understand marching band would qualify for a "sport" but do you do anything else?

I'm going to be running track for my school this year, it actually starts up in a week. There's that, and past experiences with advanced teams in soccer and some tennis playing. Track would be my first time as a varsity athlete for my school however.

I'm used to looking at ROTC stuff so I can't say how you compare to other academy nominees but it looks fairly good to me. The SAT scores could be stronger. I also don't see any sports mentioned but perhaps if you do quite well in the CFA it won't matter. However, since your classmate has an LOS your toughest job may be getting a nomination. Too bad you missed that senatorial interview. Don't miss any others.

Regardless of how you stand you can't get in without making the effort and your very best effort at that. :thumb:

If you're board qualified, it's all moot, except insofar as it affects your Whole Person score. You must be aware that your academics are more than competitive. I have yet to read here of someone who failed their CFA (not that it doesn't happen). Assuming you're DoDMERB qualified and you pass your CFA, you're competing amongst the much smaller pool of 3Q'd candidates with at least one nom. Saying who will receive appointments from that pool is probably beyond the powers of prognostication of anyone outside the CGO. Hang tight, and good luck!!!

scores- great!, grades great too! leadership good but it would be better if you can pick up another position.

If you do chose to retake the SAT, not a bad idea but you are definitely competitive right now.

The only thing of concern is how did you miss your interview? No nom= no appointment.
My senator offered phone interviews as the last resort. I gave up running at State XC/ my postseason (it was my first and final year) for my interview.

If you don't do a sport, just make sure you stay fit and keep pushing yourself physically. CFA may only be a mile run, but Navy PRT is 1.5 miles and 3 mile/or longer runs do seem to happen during plebe summer (someone verify/correct me on this). I received a LOA without a varsity letter but I did do one year of JV soccer. LOA's are hard to dictate who gets them but you could be in that range.

Also, concerning your friend. Let him know that he will be sitting on the losing side of the stand at the Army-Navy game (joke). There is also a theory more WP LOA's are given out than USNA LOA's- AF LOA's being the rarest.

The longest run over Plebe Summer is a "10k." (It's not really a 10k.)

Usually, runs are either around 4 miles (as the entire regiment, with distance and speed increasing over the course of the summer), sprints, or interval workouts in ability groups.

Just a quck comment.......i don't believe marching band counts as a sport.

You don't need a sport to be accepted. However, 90 percent of appointees do. Personally, I did regret not doing sports till my junior year. Before that, academics was my area of strength

Thanks for all the comments and help guys. To address missing my interview, we had band competitions out of state on both interview dates. Phone interviews were offered, but they happened to be during performance times. It's all well and good for one person to make a decision and miss one event to make an interview. However, I had 150 people relying on me to fulfill my duty, and as a matter of personal morals, I place others before myself.

Thanks to all of you for my help. I took my CFA today, and I did alright I think. My sit ups were disappointing, I cramped up and burned out and wanted to kick myself after.

BBall Throw: 59 ft
Sit ups: 47 D:
Pull ups: Max
Push ups: Max
Shuttle run: 7.8 second
Mile: 6:30

With this in addition to the above, any more comments?

Also, no, marching band is not a sport. But I'm not among the diehards that would kill to get it qualified as one. It's its own thing, and there's nothing wrong with that.

As for my Army friend, I'm sure all the football games will speak for themselves haha. Go Navy! Beat Army!

True. But all else being equal, a candidate with sports is stronger than the one without.

I'm considering retaking just because my sit ups were so abysmal. Is that a good idea?

Yes, I believe so. Also with sit-ups, do not pace yourself- do them as FAST as YOU CAN. I am fairly confident that based on your other results, you can definitely do a lot more sit-ups than that with better technique.
