Hello, I am a newly appointed candidate and I thought I might share some of my military accomplishments so as to give suggestions to other Soldiers who might are looking to apply as well. Here are a few things I have done in the military as well as explanations as to why I think they might be good for other Soldiers to attempt as well:

-Warrior Leader Course (WLC). This course's whole intent is to teach you how to be a leader, so West Point will look at this. Try to get Distinguished Honor Graduate from this course if you can. Also, most WLCs have a 'Leadership Award' at the end of the course, and if you can get this as well, it would look nice.

-Air Assault/Airborne/Pathfinder/Ranger. I didn't get any of these except for Air Assault (hence the username). However, I believe them all to be helpful to prove your ability in the military.

-Army Basic Instructor's Course/Small Group Instructor's Training Course (ABIC and SGITC). These will qualify you to have the additional MOS qualifier of 'Instructor.' It should be able to prove that you are able to effectively teach/lead.

-PT badge. This is pretty straightforward. Max out your PT test if you can, it shows that you are physically fit.

-Warrior of the Year. This one is a big one! I think this is what set me apart. Warrior of the Year at the higher levels is a prestigious title. I won Warrior of the Year at a Major Command level and moved on to compete in all of USAREUR in 2010. You will get to know Generals if you win, and they will not hesitate to write a recommendation for you for West Point. It will look really good if you have a General who personally knows your accomplishments. Also, Warrior of the Year tests the mettle of everything military, and if you can win, it says a lot about the person you are.

All of these you would send to your liaison, with documented proof, as there is no specific section in the candidate file online to put these accomplishments and more on. Your liaison will make sure it gets to the board.

If any other Soldiers have suggestions/recommendations, please feel free to respond, and good luck to you all! :thumb:

im trying to go to WLC next month so I can add that to my application but i dont know if my scores are going ot be high enough on my SAT and ACT

My two cents is that prepare and study for SAT/ACT. 60% of your evaluation is based on your past academic performance. Can't go back high school and change what you did. The only thing you can change is SAT/ACT. Your post education service should be able to help.

West Point wants some assurance that you won't fail academically. Afterall, it is a college. It's like a required APFT score for Air Assault School.

Ranger tab won't help you answer a math question.

You are right, a Ranger tab won't help you with a math question. However, I was just making some suggestions to Soldiers for things they can do extra, as everyone, military or not, should already know to be improving their SAT scores. :thumb: Also, any Soldier applying is automatically reviewed for a spot at USMAPS.

As a member of the military, you are automatically put into review for a spot at USMAPS if you don't get an appointment, so there is a bright side

Maybe you can consider raising your SAT scores some more. What were yours? To compare, I got a nomination with 1810 total (610, 600, 600 in each subject)

Good luck at WLC!
