Son is a competitive racing sailor who has long sought an opportunity to attend U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. As he prepared for his congressional nomination interview, he had several conversations with USNA alums and students, and added USNA as an academy choice.

MOC letter arrived Friday (11/18) with both USMMA AND USNA nominations.

He has not, however, begun a USNA application.

Is it too late to begin?

Will USNA knowledge of his pre-existing MOC nomination help?

Appreciate any information.

MOC nomination received....

I am not sure if it's too late, but I would get moving on it and submit it. There are others you will reply with better information. But again, I would.

He has time to get it done. The application must be complete be the end of Feb. If he has completed his USMMA application it will help because he will have already gathered a lot of the information and taken the CFA, Dodmerb, etc. He better get busy though because it will take some time.

Not too late. No time to waste. While most, or at least me, could not imagine preferring USMMA over USNA (I know both are terrific places), this is not about me or us. I'm not aware that having a nom in advance of application submission would lend any weight what so ever to the potential for appointment, it's a terrific benefit to have that part done.

As you're likely aware, it is obscenely competitive getting a USNA appointment, and far more so than USMMA (and that is not in any way intended as a slur, slight, slam, or denigration of USMMA ... a great place with great eduction and great opportunities including USN). Where I'm heading is that IF your son's set on USMMA, you might want to question why bother with the USNA application simply because he has an in-hand nomination, even though no small import. If he is potentially enticed by USNA? Go for it. But your time is tight and you're holidays'll not likely be absent substantial stress.

imho, it'd be WELL worth it. May God bless your son's calling.

btw, ours has been on USNA off-shore sailing team. FABULOUS experiences each summer, and welcomed therapy each fall and spring! pm me if can lend any joyfully vicarious insights!

My DS didnt start his application until very late in the game also...couldn't finish it until February, since he broke his collarbone before CFA. He received his appointment 1 week after turning in his CFA scores.

FINISH the application. No time to waste.

....assuming your MOC nomination is one on a slate of 10 noms, the Academy can't give out an appointment for that slate until either all noms turn in their application or the deadline passes.

in other words....

If the other nine nominations on your MOCs slate of 10 have completed their applications, they will still wait for your son's app or the deadline to pass before they give out an appointment.

Generally accurate ... except in the case of a candidate having an LOA, thus enabling an offer of appointment IF the lone remaining piece needed is a nomination, regardless of ranking in MOCs nomination.

Thanks for your thoughts and information. He's already in the USNA system and has much of the needed info on hand.

He made the decision to ask for NA nomination, not as an afterthought, but rather, after a great deal of thought. It came to him later than it does to some, but it did come to him.

I admire his process and his progress.

Just a correction to a post above . . . your DS has until Jan 31 to submit his application, other than the CFA, which is due NLT March 1. He won't receive an appointment (legally can't) until everything is complete.

I suggest he start immediately b/c DODMERB won't schedule his medical exam until he has completed 50% of at least one SA application. That exam often produces unexpected results (i.e., people who think they're perfectly healthy need to submit add'l info). Best to get that started ASAP.
