Hey guys/gals, I am looking for some advice regarding video games. I have grown up with them around me (My dad and older brother are both very computer savvy) and I seem to like them myself. But I feel that they are getting in the way of more important activities and they are making me a less competitive candidate for the service academies.

I only currently have one B (In pre-calculus), and the rest are A's. I still play sports, do community service, finish my homework and study for tests, but I feel that video games are not helping me at all. I feel I could get that B into an A in pre-calculus if I didn't play video games every chance I could.

What advice can you give me to help me break this habit?

Thanks!

If the game is on a computer, uninstall it and throw the disk away. If the game is on a website, block the website. If the game is on a console, sell the console, or the game that's got your grip.

Another idea would be to switch the type of game you play. I play a video game to wind down before I go to bed at night. It's a Real Time Strategy game, and I usually play two or three rounds a night with my friend before I go to sleep. Each game lasts 20-40 minutes depending on how good the team you're facing is, so at max, an hour and a half of my time is taken up every night.

Just make sure you stay away from MMORPGs. They just eat up massive amounts of time and you will never reach end game.

I have a console, and I've never played an MMO and I never will plan on it (My brother has in the past). They seem way too time consuming. I can only really play for an half our before I get bored (Unless I am with friends). Just like you, video games are a way for me to relax and wind down after a school day.

I feel that i'll eventually get bored of video games and i'll stop playing them. This Christmas, i'm especially avoiding added any video games to my wish list.

Same. When my parents asked what I wanted for Christmas, I told them a book and some cash so that I could take the ACT again and play club soccer.

Yeah. I am mostly likely just going to ask for some money from my relatives and such. I can't really think of anything I want currently, and it'll be easier to get whatever that item is later on if I have cash for it.

Your a kid and its normal for teenagers to play video games 24hrs+ a week. (From what I've seen). Its not bad to get (1 or 2) ground war games on MW3 in AFTER completing your homework.

You could also finish all the app stuff then play it out.

A few options have worked for me.

I almost neglected my Eagle Scout project too much! (Don't do that!)
If you have a longer term project, just walk away from the game until you finish it (even if it is months at a time). That isn't easy if you have basically become addicted to the games (I was). It takes willpower.

The other thing you can do is ONLY play the game once you have finished your work for the day. This is effective if you have clear amounts to accomplish for each day. It doesn't work well with more extended projects with lengthy time lines.

Fengawr, I think that the solution you need is just in yourself. I was game addict before, I played a lot of stuff like Ragnarok, Half-Life, etc. and it really destroyed my social life as well as my studies so I've decided to sell my game accounts, uninstalled those games but it doesn't worked for me. What I did is I controlled myself, by means of diversion of activities. You should think of thinks you like to do most aside from playing games, well mine is by improving myself by comparing myself to people better than me. I hope you get the idea, good luck and I know you control yourself
