Hi everyone, I have a question regarding my child's nomination process. This is all new to me so bear with me.
My son has completed everything except his cfa which is scheduled to be done soon, everything is up to date & he has finished his congressional interviews.
However, he discovered yesterday that he's "not competitive". The liason doesn't know why & the counselor at the academy only said it was because of his composite score & won't offer any more information. His ACT, SAT scores & GPA have all been acceptable for the USAFA requirements.
This is where I'm confused. Wouldn't they have told him this before he had his congressional interviews? And why won't they provide any answers as to what he needs to do?

Kimberly - His being deemed non-competitive has nothing to do with if he is competitive in your district for congressional nominations. Focus on working with your ALO to understand why. It is such an extreme competitive year that the counselor may not be at liberty to share too much. You don't mention leadership, sports etc and remember thsoe are also part of the composite or Whole candidate score. On the forum people would only speculate so definitely work with your ALO and see what they uncover.

Hopefully, you will find out something that can be changed or addressed. Best of Luck!

The composite score is the culmination of ALL areas. Yes, it's your GPA and ACT/SAT, but it's also all the other areas being evaluated. The Liaison Officer's interview/rating, Application, writing samples, teacher's evals, sports, EC, volunteering, class rank, etc... There's "Academic Composite" and "Leadership Composite". There's an overall composite. Without seeing your son's records, I can't really tell.

What I would do first, is get the CFA done. You might find that that was what was keeping the package as not competitive. As soon as the CFA has been uploaded; give it a couple days, then call the counselor to ensure the scores have been updated in the package. Then ask again if your son is competitive.

I know I am speaking to you, however, I really mean that your SON should be updating his application, and HE should be calling his counselor with any of these concerns. Wait till everything in the application is 100% complete, then you can determine what, if anything, is making your son not competitive. Best of luck. mike....

Thanks for your replies.
I'm not involved with his application process it's 100% him. I just know he was frustrated yesterday upon learning his status so, I thought I'd share my concerns on here hoping for some clarification. I just thought it was odd that he wasn't informed sooner. But like I said this is all new to me.
After his cfa this week he'll have everything done on his part & he'll continue on from there.
Thanks again!

karek is correct.

Also ask your ALO if this means Prep is a no go!

Prep selection is different than AFA selection in one way...the 4.0 uwgpa with 9 APs, Capt of FB, President of NHS, and a 1450 SAT will not be offered prep.

The candidate with the same stats, but a 1150 SAT may be offered prep.

I understand not wanting to share his stats, but you need to understand that your responses will be limited because nobody knows what his stats are. All any poster knows is it is above the mins required. The fact is 490 V and 24 R are the mins to be deemed competitive, but the median is 650 and 29 for appointments for the ACT/SAT Verbal.
