Nomination to USMMA

How easy is it to get a nomination to USMMA? I have not even applied to KP and don't plan on it, but I got a nomination from my MOC a few days ago saying that I was nominated....I find this strange as this was my last choice on my nomination app (first choice USAFA, then USNA, USMA, and finally USMMA)... Anyways, good luck to you all!

um.... it's not easy. It's just as hard to get into as USNA and USMA and USCGA (etc). The midshipmen that I know at USMMA chose USMMA as their first choice. My DS had USNA as his "plan B" to be totally honest. I mean no offense, but I find your ? offensive to those students and parents that are USMMA lovin' people. Best of luck to you on your college app process on wherever it leads you.

it's okay... USMMA is not a fall-back-school. It's not as "well known" so often time people that don't know anything about the process or the school think that. My DS is very happy at the USMMA. Mind you, any service academy is HARD and demanding... hopefully you can retake your tests... do better...and keep plugging away to make yourself as strong of a candidate as you can to get into USAFA. Best of luck to you.

So now it's time for you to do further due diligence to decide if USMMA is right for you. If it is then you should move forward to finish the application process, if not then release the nomination and go back next year to try for your first choice. Many students spend a year or two in college or at the prep schools prior to arriving on campus at any of the academies. Most importantly; don't take the slot should you be admitted, if KP is an also ran for you. It may not be the toughest of academies to gain admission to, however, as many have said here-it is by far the most challenging curriculum to complete.

It depends on where you live. In some states/districts there is very little interest in USMMA and it is relatively easy to get a nomination. Your question is not offensive. However, I wonder why you even listed USMMA as a nomination choice if you have no intention of applying.

Don't worry...you got the nomination, but I doubt that you would get the appointment. If you didn't realize that your post would be offensive then you have a lot to learn. Perhaps you can learn it elsewhere.

Many Congressmen provide multiple nominations and especially when they have not used their full quota. Depends on the Congressman.

Getting a nomination is one thing, actually getting in is yet another. Your test scores may have gotten you to this point, but you may need a bit of an attitude adjustment to be successful at any of the academies...I do wish you well. You missed a great opportunity because you didn't have the knowledge to at least research Kings Point.

In reality, it is MUCH easier to get a nomination for USMMA, as the rules for USMMA nominations are much different from those for USMA, USNA,and USAFA.

Getting the appointment is a different story, but getting a nomination for USMMA is not as hard.

Although there are no service-related or VP noms to USMMA (MOC only) you can apply to each and every MOC in your state, not just in your Congressional district.

That alone makes it MUCH easier for a USMMA candidate - if you are in California, there are 550 possible USMMA nominations available for EVERY candidate. That same candidate for USNA/USMA/USAFA only has 30 possible MOC nominations available to him.

I don't think his post was offensive at all. In fact, it may have served to clear up some fundamental misunderstandings about how the USMMA is different when it comes to nomination sources for candidates.

Sounds a bit attacking towards the OP. Certainly not helpful as is the purpose of the forum.

To the op, I always look back over a posters previous posts to try get context on they are coming from. When I did this with you this came to mind: How would like to swim on a Div 3 swim team that can beat a Div 1 team? You might want to give KP a look they did it last Saturday I hear. The mens swim team is 4-0, I believe.
My DS wasn't interested in KP originally either. Then someone he respected suggested it ( isn't that always the way ) in the winter of his Junior year. Once he did he was very excited about USMMA and it did become his #1 choice. The education and options the program offers were so much more than the other academies and whats more the careers the other academies offer are also options for a KP grad. Now freaking cool is that? He visited KP and another academy and by then he knew. Good Luck. Swagger isn't always an asset or a liability. But I gotta say,,,,,,,I hate your handle,,,lol. Unless those are some bad a$$ kittens!

I did not find your post offensive. That is because I have struggled with the same question. Why would any congressperson give a nomination to someone who has no intention of applying?

But I have seen it over and over. High School kids rank the SA's because they are told to do so on the congressperson's application for a nomination. Yet many candidates have no intention of completing the application for any academy other than their first choice. The congressperson's staff believes they are doing you a big favor by giving you a nomination to choice, 2,3 or 4?

Since Congressional nominations are given before the academy application deadlines, there is no effort by the MOC's staff people to actually confirm that a complete application has been received. A terribly flawed system, in my opinion, and you are the newest example.

I believe that all high school kids should be able to apply to any and all service academies without the added hurdle that injects additional caprice and arbitrariness, that each academies admissions office already is full of.

The reasons to have a political nomination in order to have your application reviewed, that at onece upon a time made sense, for a lot of different reasons, is archaic and obsolete in this day and age.

Only the Coast Guard Academy has it right as we speak, in my opinion.

Also, you sound like a weak candidate to any service academy. I would suggest that you make good use of the errant nomination you received to USMMA, and complete the application and possibly be offered a seat at the prep school in New Mexico. It would be the best decision you ever made, and you would not even have a clue that it was, until years from now.

I am sorry NYBEAR, but you have no opinion on whether or not I am a weak candidate. I am not sure who you are, where you went to school, or anything about you, but I do know that the service academies (all of them) look for a "whole candidate". You obviously know nothing about me, so before you go on saying that I "sound like a weak candidate to any service academy", you should think a little bit more just because you read one or more of my posts... shame on you.

Yes- academies want a whole candidate. Are you an Eagle, have you held positions of authority in school clubs, sports, volunteer service? The MOC's also look for whole candidate. Maybe a good place to start is to find out from your MOC what they felt put you in category for last nomination request and spend the upcoming year working on whatever those points are and then resubmit. If USMMA was your fall-back choice it may not be right for you. Only you can know that after research . Also, as my DS went through this process, he ONLY wanted to go to KP. Because of that he only put KP down on his applications. I think that worked in his favor. It is important to know a candidate wants something so badly that that is all they will take. That may not be the way you feel. You may just want to go to any academy but we were told that would work against him so he only put what he wanted. And lastly, this much I know is true as far as applying to an academy, like any college/university/academy, if you don't apply, you absolutely won't get in! Simple as that! Good luck!
