Hello everyone,

I have a question regarding sports at the academy. I have always wanted to try wrestling but it somehow happened in my life that I was involved in other types of sports because of the fact that I really enjoy team sports and teamwork. Can a cadet take wrestling or other combative class if he or she does not have any base experience of it? I am not saying that I have an ambition to go for a state competition , but maybe as an amateur?

Thanks

There is company intramural wrestling available in the fall. My son enjoyed it and his company came in 3rd in the corp at the season end tournament.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe all cadets take wrestling their plebe year.

USMA2016- I think you are referring to boxing/military movement. Wrestling is entirely different.

And does that intramural company wrestling thing count as a sport? (I've done one year of wrestling in high school and would love to continue it at West Point, but I am well aware I wouldn't be up to the level of NCAA competition.)

First semester as a plebe you will likely take Boxing (male) or Combatives (female) for one section (half semester), then military movement the other.

This is normally mandatory. (certainly is listed so in the white book, but there may be exceptions)

You will also be required to participate in some form of athletics. Corps squad, Club Squad, or company level. (You could think of company as intramural).

You'll know if you are Corps Squad already most likely, I don't think there are any walk-ons. So it's normally just recruited athletes.

There will be tryouts for some Club sports during beast, and a club night that you can learn about & express interest in the various clubs. Not all club sports take the place of company athletics & drill. (IE: have "authos"). But most which are competitive do. It's driven by how often they practice, and usually have limited slots.

If not in Club or Corps, then you will participate in company athletics. There is a short list of sports each semester to pick from. As a plebe, you will be asked your preference, but will likely be assigned one, as you are last in priority, and male/female factors in.

If you use your google fu and search for USMA Whitebook, you can see the typical sports offered fall/spring, and also the specific athletic requirements by year. the latest version I have seen is 2008, but so far it appears to be exactly what plebes are doing.

There is also a club web page I have posted here in the forum earlier. You can see all the club sports. It does not always show if it has "authos" or not, but you can get an idea based on the number of practices, etc.

Wrestling

Hawk is exactly correct. The only way to get wrestling is to get on your company wrestling team. This is normally easy to do. My son (Class of 2015)was a good high school wrestler but not up to Corp Squad level - these recruited wrestlers are normally High School State champs or at least high in the state. He got on the company wrestling team and had 7 wins and one loss in competition with other company teams. He said that many of the company wrestlers were very good but that many had little or no experience.

Thanks for all your replies. Another question , does this policy apply to all academies? thnx

Walk-Ons

You will also be required to participate in some form of athletics. Corps squad, Club Squad, or company level. (You could think of company as intramural).

You'll know if you are Corps Squad already most likely, I don't think there are any walk-ons. So it's normally just recruited athletes.

So there is no way to possibly walk-on to any division 1 sports like football or track?

Don't rule it out based on my comment. I do know even some of the less well known corps squad don't have tryouts for walkons. But exceptions may exist.

Maybe someone closer to your area of interest can comment.

You are certainly able to walk-on to a sports team. It may be difficult be you are able to. Say for track, you run a certain time at a try-out and you can make the team. However, there are only a certain number of spots on each team, making it difficult

Sometimes you are recruited for a team, and then you are cut, too. I've seen this happen on the swim team...not sure about others.
