I have been recruited by the USMA and have verbally committed. How much will this help me gain admission? 3.58 GPA and active in school activities. I also work quite a bit caddying. Thank you for your response!

You still have to be qualified academically, medically and physically and have a nomination. But being a recruited athlete definitely helps.

If you are a recruited athlete and are 3Qd by WP you will get in. They will findf you a nomination.

I agree with Big Nick. My son was recruited by W.P. for football. He was told he needed to be tripled Q which he is. He received a nom yesterday for WP and Navy.

If you are "really" recruited and don't 3Q, West Point will send you to a Prep School.

I am assuming you are a junior. If you are a senior, unless you already open your application file, West Point will send you to a Prep school.

Usually for seniors, September/October you should get a LOA. I don't know how other college recuritng works, but for West Point that will be the first official document. I have seen SA coaches write letters of recommendation for the nomination.

My recommendation is to still work on your back up plans, as many things could go wrong.

Prep depends on the sport. Football, yes. Swimming, no. What sport are you being recruited for?

Thank you for the responses. I am a junior in H.S. and jumped at the offer when the coach called July 1. My dream is to serve as an officer in the United States Army and possibly follow my Grandfathers service with the 82nd Airborne. I am not a football player, my sport has very few recruits so I would rather stay anonymous. I took the ACT test on December 10 and do not have results yet. I will open my file on January 10 and will also apply for Summer Leadership at that time.

If you are in a non-revenue generating sport, the rule of thumb is get your own nom if at all possible.

MemberLG is right on.
There is a difference between "really" recruited and just recruited.
Coaches call and send nice letters to juniors saying somthing like "you've landed on our recruiting radar". But they send those nice letters to a lot more than they can take.

You are "really" recruited when your coach "support" you and you receive an LOA at the beginning of your senior year. SA's recruiting process is totally different from that of civilian colleges. You need to be 3 qd and receive a nomination to be appointed, so verbal commit in your junior year does not guarantee you for an admission.

But the fact the coach made a personal call to you is a good sign, Caddyboy. And if you are invited to an "official" visit, it is a super good sign.

Keep working on your academics and sport really hard and become a captain. Because if you excel in your academics and sports, you have a big chance of being appointed on your own without the support from the coach.

Good luck

I'm a recruited athlete and from my experience I was contacted by the WP coach around this time, Nov I think for me. You then just work hard at the standardized test scores and try to score as high as possible. During this time you really cant do anything else except maybe sign up for SLS, also keep in mind that the coach has to follow NCAA rules. Towards the end of your school year talk to your teachers about filling out the CAR forms and Recs. Remember the earlier you get you file complete, when it opens, the more likely hood you get a chance of getting an LOA. As a recruited athlete though, you should get one, key word should, around Sept when they start sending them out. Also, when you are sending in your nomination packets let them know that you are a recruited athlete. Being a recruit helps a lot, BUT you still have to get everything in on time and be 3Qd. A help full tip, get DODMERB done asap, the last thing you need is for your file to be floating around their system while they are also trying to process the other thousand or so applicants. Good luck though!:thumb:

Sounds like you are a prospective applicant with a set of eyes on you. As a junior, there is no way you have been officially recruited by the USMA for your sport. I would highly suggest that you continue working hard in your classes and seek additionally nomination sources. Do not assume that you have a higher chance for admission just because you are a prospective recruited athlete.

I am anxious and excited about possibly attending West Point and becoming a United States Army Officer. Since I started this topic in December things are moving in the right direction for me...I hope! I had a day visit to WP and seeing it from the inside was very cool. I am so impressed with the people and facilities, I really want to be a part of the great things that occur there.

My current profile is:

ACT Composite 31, Reading 33, English 33, Science 30, Math 28, Writing 29(8)

Accepted to SLS and was notified that I have been selected for Boys State. (very excited!!!!)

I am a recruited athlete and have been contacted regularly by the coach since verbally committing. He is confident of my chances and has been really supportive.

Any thoughts or suggestions about how I can improve my file would be greatly appreciated! Go Army!
