Home for Christmas break.

But I want to see my TEE grades...

Good grief...every December we see this same thread pop up...later today have your mom check on West Point Moms...we'll have a document posted on how to do this.

Here is a gift to you plebes from a firstie: (or is this for plebe moms?)

Accessing the West Point Network (accessing CIS for grades, signing out, email via Outlook, etc)

Step 1: Log into your computer using CAC (ID Card)
Step 2: Open Cisco VPN Client
Step 3: Press Connect Button
• You will be prompted to enter your PIN number. This is the same number that you log in with. Credentials are already set on VPN Client. Do not mess with anything or you will not be able to log in.
Step 4: When prompted, select continue (something will come up about West Point being a secure network)
Step 5: You are now connected to the West Point Network, and can access everything as you normally would at West Point.

Thanks, but I can't seem to find that client on my computer!

Cadet says it should be there; keep looking. I am assuming you set it up properly before you left WP, right?

Class of 2015 doesn't have the Cisco client I think.

However you're able to set up a VPN client and login using your CAC card using windows. Search "VPN" in the start menu...

The only issue is I don't know the IP address >.< Does anyone else have it set up or can provide the right IP address?

I'm in the same boat as you. Looking for TEE grades...

Guys and gals - should all this stuff be on a public forum? I know it doesn't get anyone in, but it does make it easier to hack.

There are detailed directions for access in a document on West Point Moms (facebook group). If your mom is a member, get her to access the info for you there. There is a different set of directions for 2015.

Am I the only one that thinks it is kind of funny that cadets have to go to their Mom's to find out how to access the computer system at USMA?

I'm a Dad... but I'm sure my bride would say that all her boys have to go to her for everything.

The cadets all know by now that the West Point Moms' network is the fastest way to get information. Our group has 860 members and adds more daily...so obviously someone is going to have the answers if you need help. :thumb:

Unfortunately West Point Dad's FB group appears to be more interested in Football & other USMA athletics. Very little else is discussed there.

Personally, I believe fragmenting the information sources reduces the effectiveness overall. Much of what is discussed in West Point Moms should really be in plebe-net, etc. IE: it's not specific to Mom's.

Likewise, facebook as an information conduit itself has some challenges, it's blocked on many corporate & government networks, so it impacts the capability of some mom's to utilize it. (I know of several locally impacted by this)

But it is what it is, so currently you have to aggregate the multiple sources, and just sort out the periodic contradictory info. With USMA public affairs being the trump source if & when they post something.

There is apparently an installation folder when the laptop is imaged. You need to find it and configure it.

Of course, plebe-net and parent-net are not official sources of West Point information (in spite of what they would like you to believe).

West Point Moms' Facebook group provides a great service where moms can discuss things and ask questions of upperclass and grad moms in confidence. Moms get tired of hearing/reading the long, drawn-out comments and regurgitated information that Dads seem to like.

Just curious....how do you know what is discussed in West Point Moms, hawk? Is your wife a member?

This is correct. There are directions on the IT course website on how to do so if you have taken the course or if you know someone who has that can send you the pdf

And facebook mom or Dads is official????

Which is a wonderful thing.... except when it's also positioned as the only real source of non-mom specific information. As in this thread.

I find this quite funny, especially given your following comment:

Just curious....how do you know what is discussed in West Point Moms, hawk? Is your wife a member?

And how do you know that Dad's want regurgitated information???? That's a very sweeping generalization.

The reality is that in many families all information resources are utilized. Moms monitor the moms list. Dads monitor the dads list. We all monitor plebe.net. And even some hyperactive parents clubs in other states.

And in each information source, multiple times this year, and every year, there is incorrect/invalid information posted. Certainly contradictory. And also some accurate information not available elsewhere.

And every information source seems to want to position their sources as "best", most accurate. (well, the Dad's FB does not, they just talk about football )

So to your question about how do we know about the various groups??? Our parents club outlines the various sources to plebe families. And stresses that nothing you hear in informal groups can be taken as final until the information comes out from USMA public affairs.

More detailed info, more timely, what happened last year, etc can all occur in the informal lists. But authoritative? Nope. We have learned that forum/list info is usually directionally accurate, is a good hint at what can/will/did happen. But until it comes out from public affairs or the cadets are briefed, you can't count on it. I could list multple examples just this summer/fall, but that would be too long & drawn out.

My point still stands, fragmented and gender specific information flow is never a good thing. It results in duplication of effort, contradictory answers, and does not benefit anyone.

It's not unique to the USMA situation, it's just that the various USMA parents groups have carried it to an extreme.

Official source of information for parents:
http://www.usma.edu/dcomm/wppc.asp

There is also an official West Point Parents email distribution list run by Deb in the Admissions office (previously within the Public Affairs office). Deb also has the West Point Parents Facebook group that usually has time-sensitive information.

Various independent Facebook and Yahoo groups do have some additional information that may be gleaned from West Point sources, but like the game of telephone, may suffer from degradation over time.

Just to add to the mix, we 2014 parents also have our own group to share information.

One deficiency of the Internet is propagation of information both good and bad. Only the discerning and experienced eye can separate the wheat from the chaff. The Internet has greatly improved communication. That can be said.

.
You took some poetic license with my comments as you posted your answers, hawk.

Nowhere did I say that West Point Moms is an official group. The only source of official West Point information is the WP Public Affairs office, as pointed out by M2inOr. Can other groups provide helpful information? Sure. However, chances are it originated with Deb and Public Affairs.

I didn't ask how "we" know about the various groups, I asked you how you know what is posted on the West Point Moms FB group.
