My son has received a type 7 AFROTC scholarship. He has been accepted to Texas A&M and intends to use the scholarship there. We are out of state but TAMU has offered him in-state tuition. My question is can he use the type 7 at TAMU or will he have to convert it to a 3 year type 2? He will be making some phone calls tomorrow to try and find out but I thought somebody on here may know the answer. I think he can use the type 7 but I am not 100% sure.

If Texas A&M is like Kentucky, they will accept the Type 7 Scholarship regardless of state residency for AFROTC Scholarship recipients. You should be able to find this out on the AFROTC website under college subsidies.

If TAMU says that they charge ROTC cadets IS even as OOS AFROTC will allow to keep it as a Type 7 for 4 yrs, no need to convert it to a Type 2 3 yrs.
Basically if you look at the Type 7 they have a little blurb that says you can go anywhere on that 7 as long as it doesn't surpass the cost of tuition for your IS college. That is the real difference between a 2 and a 7. A 2 they will allow you to make up the difference if it costs more, a 7 you can't and are basically forced to convert it into a 2 3 yr.

This is exactly as I thought. I think his IS tuition at TAMU has some minimum gpa requirements so there are some contingencies. Although if he hit those minimums he would likely lose the AFROTC scholarship as well.
I just looked it up, he would lose the scholarship that gives him IS tuition if he fails to maintain a 2.0.

I have found typically that the mins set by the school are actually higher than those set by AFROTC. For our DS his merit from his school is set at 3.0, which 0.2 pts higher than the AFROTC scholarship.
Even being at the 3.0 would place the scholarship in jeopardy if they are non-tech majors because traditionally for SFT selection the gpa hovers around a 3.2-3.3 cgpa.
No SFT and they have the ability to revoke the scholarship and kick you out of ROTC which would mean you would be on the hook for OOS tuition at TAMU for the remaining yrs of college.
One thing no cadet ever wants to do is lose their chances because their gpa was not high enough for SFT. Luckily for your DS TAMU has a higher rate than the national avg, my guess is because it is considered a Corps. college.

I have to say Texans always get my respect, because they believe in the cliche of Don't Mess with Texas!
In our yrs in the military, it was only Texans that always had somewhere in the home the Texas flag. My favorite was when we were in KS, at Leavenworth and somebody actually painted the roof of their dog's house, the flag of Texas.
21 yrs traveling the world as a born, bred and raised NJ girl, the only flag I know on sight is the Texas flag. I could vaguely tell you the NJ flag from my mind, but I am sure it would be off alot. We lived in NC for @ 8 yrs (3 tours) of the 21, and I couldn't tell you it, 5 yrs in VA and I can tell you it is blue, with a lady and a wreath.
However for Texas, not only would I be able tell you the design, but be able to tell the color tones of the blue and red. Kind of like that Hokie thing for VT...it is not burgundy, it is called Chicago red...don't ask me why Chicago, because to this day I have yet to find someone who knows why it is called Chicago red. I can also tell you the correct tone for the orange.
ASK anyone from Texas how they describe Texas and they will say "God's country"
Got to love them. We have 2 friends in the AF that attended TAMU, met there and now retired in NC. Their kids go to nationally know colleges in NC, but on their license plate (NC has only 1 plate) they still have TAMU.
TAMU is like VT IMPO, they are what I would call RABID. The school spirit is intense, and nobody will ever convince them that there is a better school in the country. I have seen that with our DD and VT.
There is something comforting about that when you send them hours and hours away from home. It makes you happy to know that the school is a family for them, and when the school is their family you have less fears as a parent. Mainly due to the fact that they ARE motivated personally to do well academically so they can stay there. That to me is something you learn as parents. ROTC and academics are a part of their life, but if they love the school and their friends, they will succeed.
Maybe it isn't the academics or the training, maybe it is the spirit and desire to stay that motivates them to achieve higher. They know, at least AFROTC cadets, that the scholarship can be revoked, and if you can't afford to stay there without the scholarship, their world goes upside down, it is a great compliment to TAMU that so many strive so hard and are acknowledged with much higher national selection rates for SFT.

I have to agree with this. I know some TAMU grads and there support of the school is incredible. When we visited I was truly impressed. I had not been on another campus that had the level of school spirit that we experience there.

Just wait, when he comes back for his 1st break that school spirit will be running through his veins.
We have a DD and before she went to VT she cared nothing about sports (FB/BB), nothing about ROTC (not in it), thought sororities and fraternities were below her. As a sophomore now, she argues about all of those things with her siblings and how VT is so much better.
She is rabid.
The funny thing is before she went to VT, I never noticed the amount of VT alumni in our area (car stickers); afterall VT is 4 hrs away. Once she left I started to notice cars in the parking lots of grocery stores, Target, Lowe's etc. with VT stuff.
You see the occasional UVA, JMU, GMU, but VT is everywhere. They are proud, proud, proud of VT and want everyone to know it!

My son talked to TAMU today and they definitely accept type 7 from out of staters. Confirmed what I though so I figured I would post the findings.
Packer congrats for you and your DS. Quite the achievement.
My DS was accepted at a&m but ultimately opted for vmi. His best friend is now at a&m and loves it!! Aggie spirit is quite impressive - very much in evidence when we were there last April
