hello,

Is it true that the Academy can only accept a limited number of JROTC/ROTC nominated applicants?
I currently have a JROTC nomination and have had everything submitted since October and have heard nothing from USNA.

any help would be great!

Thanks!

My understanding is that they accept 20 that are supposed to ranked by order of merit. It may be awhile until college grades are available for Sr ROTC applicants. Good luck!

There have been a few appointments on a JROTC nomination already.

Judging by that, USNA is not waiting for college grades for NROTC applicants.

I have no explanation for this. Just apply to every nomination source possible and sit tight.

nuensis,

Do you know of any first year college candidates that have received an appointment?

Otherwise, I believe your assumption is false. USNA waits for college grades because that is a better predictor of how they will actually do in college. Sometimes, if the candidates has completed more than 1 or 2 semester(s), they can make that determination during the fall semester.

interesting answers...my congressional nomination interview is this week so I am very eager! just wanted to ease my mind about my JROTC nomination because its been sitting in my file for the past 2 months or so.
Also, are the 20 selected including both the JROTC AND ROTC nominations? that just seems like a very small number..

Post #27 in the Appointment thread a few threads down from this one.

A few people on Facebook have also posted that they have been appointed with a JROTC nom.

My assumption is only an assumption, and it is based upon what people have posted on the internet. It's not very reliable. Like I said, it makes no sense to me, either.

What if someone receives an appt though JROTC nom but revives other noms. Will JROTC nom be moved for another candidate?

20 admissions would be about 1.5% of class size if my math is correct. I think that's pretty good.

navy2016,

It really depends. Just because he has another nomination doesn't mean that is the one USNA will charge him/her with. Also, there is no stipulation that USNA must use every nomination to its maximum.

As said before, this is something you don't have control over and therefore, while you might be curious, it's not something you need to worry about. You apply for all nominations you can and see where the dice roll.

nuensis,

The appointment was for JROTC (high school) and not ROTC (college). I stand by my previous post. First semester college candidates SHOULD NOT expect to be notified before February.

this is of particular interest to my family, our son has an NJROTC nom and was told by our congressman that although he had a strong application, he would not get an MOC nom because ofhis NJROTC nom. Anyone out there know if this improves chances or hurts them? I've seen this 20 number as a limit for NJROTC/ROTC noms here and on other forums, curious if there is any truth to that. Also curious if one is not one of the "20" one would then compete with the general population of applications for a nom. Any info. is greatly appreciated.

I believe it will hurt his chances, with only one nomination, your son can only compete within that nomination category. So if he had another nominiation, he would have competed within another nomination cateogry. If he is full qualified, but not appointed, he will go into the national waiting list and compete against many others.

Another way to look at it is

with MOC nomination, the competition is 1 to 10
with JROTC nomination, the competition is 20 to whatever NJROTC/ROTC nominations
with being on the national waitlist, your competition is a lot.

There were 157 JROTC/ROTC nominations for 2015, so the odds are actually pretty decent.

Member LG- Are you sure they go into the national waitlist? It has been stated in these forums before, I think by Mongo, that the ROTC nominations don't go into the national pool. We are in MD-7. I have the same concern as the OP. Last year I was told he might not get a nom from the Rep. since he already had a JROTC nom. He didn't get the nom., but we don't know if this was the reason. He was well qualified and his BGO #1 pick.

Don't know, my understandating is that all qualified candidates with nomination not appointed goes into the National Waiting list (at least for West Point), don't see a good reason why a fully qualified candidate with a nomination will be excluded from the national waiting list.

157 noms for class of 2015 does not mean that that was the total of nominated applicants, my understanding is that that is the total of ROTC/NJROTC noms in the class that was appointed, couldn't there have been more (300-400?) ROTC/NJROTC noms?

That's what I had thought too, but there's no way there could have been 4,905 congressional appointments and 806 Presidential appointments.

I think 157 is the number that received the nomination, which is surprisingly low. JROTC as a recruitment program is apparently just not pulling very many candidates for the Academy.
