Any idea how many AFROTC scholarships are available? I have seen the number 900 for this year but not from an official source so I dont know if it is accurate or even close. If it is 900 there would only be 2-3 type 1 non-tech scholarships available.

I have absolutely no clue on the amount for this yr., but 900 would seem to be in the ballpark.

Traditionally ROTC awards mimic SA apptmts, plus or minus a few percentage points. AFROTC is a bigger pool because 95% of AFA applicants will apply as plan B, but the reverse for ROTC candidates is not true....95% of ROTC applicants do not apply for AFA.

The fact is if you look at their site, you will see it says this:

5% of all scholarships awarded to AFROTC candidates are Type 1.

95% of all Type 1 are tech.

So if 900 are awarded only 2-3 would be non -tech Type 1.

The true key piece missing is how many apply. I am going to assume it is 10K+.

That means 10% are awarded, and 5% of that 10% are type 1. 5% of the Type 1 are non-tech.

20% go Type 2

75% go Type 7.

Now let's address the type 7. If 900 are awarded and I did my math correct @ 675 will get a Type 7. If they have even 7K applicants, not 10K; the recipient was deemed by AFROTC HQ as the top 10% nationally. Not too shabby!

These scholarships are off of the first board only. There are 4 boards so perhaps only 25% of the total have been awarded so far.

From what I can tell from reading multiple threads as far a forum members go, not a single Type 1 or Type 2 HSSP Scholarship was awarded from the December board. Odd?

Odd? I don't think so. I'll bet only 2-3% of scholarship applicants post on this Board.

pv123 received a type 1.

Actually if I am not confusing pv with someone else they received an IS Commanders scholarship sim. to Type 1. It was not HS. Still great news and def amazing for them, but I don't want candidates to believe it is the traditional type 1.

My DD was eligible and in the system for HSSP board but was removed right before to qualify for commander leadership scholarship. A Det commander can give out a type 1 through type 7 to eligible HSSP candidates one per year. She was chosen last November for Type 1 with a major of her choice. All the Det commanders in the US have the chance to pick one high schooler a year under this program. This type 1 is the same scholarship under the HSSP board. All are for high schoolers entering their freshman year for AFROTC.

pv123,

Thanks for the clarification of your DD.

Again, congrats, you and her should be immensely proud regardless of the source.

That is an amazing feat. Wrap her in bubble wrap today if you haven't already.

However, that being said, if I am correct your DD can only use it at that 1 college, whereas a traditional Type 1 can be taken to any college which AFROTC accepts. pv123 I think that is what posters are wanting clarification about regarding the scholarship...must she attend that college and only that college, or can she take it to another college?

I know we are discussing minutia, but when the candidates are fretting over scholarships the minutia matters. Right now on the list no candidate received a traditional Type 1 AFROTC HQ scholarship on this forum.

Please also understand that this site is a small, small part and honestly if you look at the past few yrs even for the SA apptmts., you will see maybe 15% of the incoming class is on this site. That means to me, personally, I am sure Type 1's went out already, but the recipients have yet to find this site.

Think about it, if pv123 was not on this site many would never know about the commander having this ability to award.

Yes, that's correct, a Commander Leadership scholarship is to the one college, but in her case it was to her number one choice dream school. I would highly suggest students to start early junior year to establish relationships and goals with the Det commanders and the schools they want to attend ROTC. This is how she received her type 1. :)
