Is there a way to find out if I'm fully qualified?

I recently received a principal nomination to USAFA from my Representative and I was wondering if there is a way to find out whether I am a qualified candidate. I know USNA calls it "tripled qualified" but I don't think the standards are the same for both academies.

I'm sure if you received a principle nomination your congressman/congresswoman must have deemed you qualified, so don't worry! Demographics and statistical information for appointees can be found inside the 2016 candidate catalog, and don't worry if you are weak in one area because your strengths in another can make up for it. Just be the best that you can be! :thumb:

Are the terms correct in the 2016 candidate catalog (the one they sent out early November), because at the bottom of my "application status" section (the very first one where it shows "your status," "your application is...," etc.) reads the following message:

--
*When you submit your application you become a "Prospect." When USAFA processes your application you become an "Applicant." Should USAFA deem you competitive and/or you receive a nomination, you will become a "Candidate." Note that you may receive a nomination and still not be deemed competitive by USAFA.

The term "prospect" mentioned above is not mentioned in the catalog's definition of terms, nor is the catalog's "highly qualified" term mentioned in the above message. The above message seems to indicate that the term "candidate" is as high as the ladder goes.

If it helps, my application reads that my status is "candidate," but I have not yet received a nomination (although my MOC assured me that I would know before Christmas, which is 3 days from now).

Can anyone shed a little light on the verbage here? Much appreciated.

Congrats on the principal nomination!

1Q - Medical: Status on your Application should read "Qualified".
2Q - Physical: Make sure each CFA event score is average or above.
3Q - Academic: A bit more difficult to evaluate. SAT/ACT scores should be average or above. I'm not sure on the rest: class rank, GPA, school ranking, course difficulty.

Of course, you could contact your ALO or Admissions Counselor and just ask. . .

DS contacted Admissions Counselor and was told "Please check your status page to see if you are fully qualified. The information is there." Well, we all know that it not there. Yes, we know from the DODMERB site that he is medically qualified. His PFA scores were all either max or well above average, except BB throw which was barely above average. His academics are really great. The assumption is that he has to be triple qualified but the page does not specifically state this and Admissions Counselor would not verify for us. Not much else to do. They could eliminate annoying phone calls and e-mails if they would just put a fully qualified y/n checkbox on the page.

My son received a letter about two months ago stating "As a result of our evaluation of your admissions status, or recent updating of your admissions file, you are now a tentative candidate for admission. This means you do not yet have an official nomination, but we believe you have the potential to qualify for admission to the Academy". He now has received word that our MOC has given him a nomination, does this mean that he will now be offered an appointment?

That letter means he is a candidate.

Congrats on him getting a nomination. Once he completes his entire application, the Admissions board will review his application and assign a WCS (Weighted Composite Score). He needs to be 3Q to be a qualified candidate who is qualified for an appointment. He must be medically, physically, and academically qualified. Then he may get an appointment depending on what type of nomination he has and how high his WCS is. If the nomination is a Principal nomination and he is 3Q, then he will receive an appointment. Otherwise he must have the highest WCS among the candidates on the MOC's slate.

However, he must have a B plan because the number of qualified candidates failing to get an appointment last year exceeded the number of qualified candidates that got an appointment. And this year is going to be more competitive than last year as there will be less appointments going out with more applications coming in. Those receiving an appointment will get a BFE (Big Fat Envelope), mostly in March/April. Those not receiving an appointment will get a TWE (Thin White Envelope) as they will be QNV (Qualified No Vacancy).

So your DS is making nice progress but he still has a bit of a ride to go. He needs to complete his application (doing his absolute best) if he hasn't already finished. And then the wait until the end of March. . .
