Here is an email I received from a person who got my email address through the service academy forum. I am not happy about this, since my email appears to be have given out without permission.:frown:Has this happened to anyone else? Has anyone else received this email (I don't intend on answering). I don't remember seeing any fine print when joining the forum allowing my address to be shared.
This is the message:

Hello.
My name is Emily Dooley and I am a reporter at Newsday in New York. I'm working on a story about the Merchant Marine Academy and have been trying to track down some parents, students, former students, etc.
My story is about the academy itself and some of the recent events going on there, such as the transfer of the TV Kings Pointer, closure of GMATS and the loss of the superintendant. The story is also about the school itself, the importance of the program, etc.
Would you mind talking with me?

Hi, When I click on your name, there is an option to send you an email...it does not give me your address though. This person may have clicked the same link. Hope this helps.
 
I think before anyone responds to any emails for information regarding what has been happening at KP, it's important to think about why these questions are being asked, for whom the answers will benefit, and whose agenda is being fulfilled when reporters are looking for answers. For me personally, I can't answer this email.

KPDramamama: They don't have your email address unless you respond to the email- right now this is a blind link. However, if you respond- they will then have your email address. So my suggestion is that if you wish to remain anonymous - either : don't respond to the email, or create a hotmail account for the occasion. Alternatively- if you really do have an interest in talking to this reporter- give her a call. While you may want to tread carefully here, but I am a little apprehensive about the larger picture with USMMA in light of some of the things going on of late and it might not be a bad thing to get some friendly but concerned perspectives out to the larger world.
 
Bruno. LOVE that ring! So, thanks for the info. I'm still apprehensive about making any sort of contact. I'm not the best person for the job. Wonder why I was selected, when there are so many others!
 
Just so everyone is clear:

ServiceAcademyForums does not give out or sell member information. The only information that is public is what you as a member have chosen to make public. As noted above it is possible for people to contact you via email through a link in your profile if you have that option selected; however, it does not provide your actual email address.

This is not the first time reporters have used this board as a means to contact people and in fact if I remember correctly some were actually quoted with their usernames in a story in the past. We do not condone this method; however, we cannot fully prevent this from happening.

If anyone has any questions please feel free to contact any of the administrative staff or moderators.
 
I think the best advice here would be to direct any questions to the Alumni Association Foundation, especially given the track record of some NY Metropolitan/ Long Island area news media outlets regarding their propensity to "twist" the story to suit a particular agenda. Note: I purposely did not state any specific news media organization, and I am not familiar with the inquiring reporter in this particular situation, but given that my reply is posted on this thread, well...
 
If you're in the "know" and are comfortable speaking, then go ahead. If you have nothing to add, or you're not comfortable... then don't.

Having had some experience with the NY Media in my professional life, I would advise extreme caution. The sad fact is that it's very easy for a professional journalist to steer questions and comments so they can then write the story however they want - regardless of how you intend your statements to portray things and relay your perspective, even if you are a trained, experience professional or have one with you when you are speaking. If you don't know the reporter and his or her perspective or objective; and you are not in a position to "retaliate" by NOT granting them timely access to information they want or need to report about in their "daily beat" in the future, you really have no way to manage or influence how they select and use the "snippets" of your answers in the final article they will publish. You may be a sad commentary on the state of media in our world today but it's not meant to be - it is however being said by someone who has been accurately quoted and totally mis-portrayed twice in my life by large New York Daily News Papers in my life already.

I agree with some, but not all of this. I agree with the fact that snippets can be taken out of context (I know a reporter from Politico that did the very thing to me, I gave her a call after). The quote was correct, the context was not, and the general mood of the article was exactly what I thought it would be.

Fear of being misquoted or taken out of context is an excuse, but not always the best one. If you have nothing to add, then why do an interview? If you're only speculating, then why do an interview?

But if you do know something, and you are comfortable speaking to a reporter.... then feel free too.

If every public affairs professional locked up when they thought someone might have an agenda or might not be 100% objective.... no one would ever speak, and the U.S. public would not get the information they so richly deserve.

I default to speaking, given the appropriate topic, knowledge and need. That said, I've had training, so that may make it a little easier.

I'm not sure what information you could possibly add, that isn't posted on this website or already available.

In the end, it's a shaky trust between the interviewer and interviewee. Push comes to shove and you are butchered, you can contact the editor, or someone even more hated, the paper's ombudsman (not all have this).

Apologies if my notes to some of you caused consternation.
Not my intention.
I do not have anyone's email. I do not plan to quote from this board without permission. I am not an ambush reporter.
As I said in my note, I'm working on a story about the academy and some of the recent developments there. I reached out to some members on this forum to get some insight from parents, alumni, etc.
Right now, I have many published documents and comments to write my story about Rear Admiral Greene's departure, alumni/parent reaction, the closure of GMATS, the transfer of TV Kings Pointer, the refund of midshipmen fees, etc.
What I don't have is the impact this may or may not be having on school or the midshipmen. My husband is an Air Force Academy grad and I am well aware of the stressors service academies place on students.

Everyone and Emily, I honestly don't know all the impacts the changes have on the mids and school. I don't go there. Our mid hasn't reported anything effecting him. I think speaking with someone from the Alumni Association, in particular recent grads, or the head of the Parents Association would give the best and biggest perspective. And I think anyone who speaks to any papers needs to keep in mind they have just a piece of the picture and articles that are written even with the best of intentions can be used for other people's purposes who are NOT involved with the initial article being written.

Ohhhhhhh Emily! We've all seen people burned for that though! :biggrin:

Off the record, on background, on deep background..... Anything you say "can" be used.... if you trust a reporter, or have a mutual trust.... "off the record" isn't so scary, but in the end, nothing is actually "off the record". I don't say that to challenge Emily's word, it may be very good, just a "lesson" for general public about "off the record" opportunities.
 
The few times I have been quoted in the press, it has never been correct. I see why politicians never say anything.

It's ok if politicians don't say anything, nothing useful comes out of their mouths except "look at me" these days.
