drop out or D on course

Hello,

Would NAPS take away a candidates offer of appointment if he/she dropped out of a course? I currently am facing a dilemma as I have a D in Calculus.
 
If you were offered an appointment letter it may have language to help you understand what or if there are any conditions that you must meet for the appointment. You should consider talking to your academic adviser and see what your options are. Also if you are at NAPS, do you or have you taken advantage of extra instruction from the teacher? Good Luck!

In answer to your question, I seriously doubt it. If you have sufficient classes to graduate, dropping out of this one is unlikely to affect an appointment decision.

However, I'd stick with the course for a number of reasons:

(1) You will learn more calculus which will help you at NAPS
(2) It's only January so you have plenty of time to improve
(3) At NAPS and USNA, if you are getting a "D," (which many people actually do) you typically can't drop out because you have to complete and pass the course to graduate

I spoke to my b&g officer today and he said dropping out could potentially tear my offer of appointment to shreds...

but also at the same time, I do not believe that my D in Calculus will go up anytime soon. It's pretty solid where it is now..

I hate catch-22s..
 
Helmet, stick with it. As UNSA1985 said, there is still time - it is early in the year. My advice to any student is to ask for help from the teacher, extra work my help you grasp the material better. Additionally if there is any consideration for grading, an instructor will be more sympathetic to a person who has asked for help early and often. Good luck!

Should I contact my USNA admission's officer? My B&G officer is slightly disappointed about this whole situation..
 
I can't speak for your BGO but earning a D in a course when you're headed to NAPS doesn't to me seem to be the end of the world. Not ideal, but not the end of the world. The purpose of NAPS is to help those who need additional academic prep. If you're doing your best and still earning a D, it sounds like you're one of those people, at least as far as calculus is concerned.

What USNA doesn't want is someone who "tanks" once he/she has an appointment -- goes from As and Bs to Ds and Fs b/c he/she stops studying. That doesn't sound like you.

And, yes, your RD is the best source of information. However, understand that this is the busiest time of the year for them (USNA decisions, NASS decisions) so don't fret if you don't get an immediate answer.

I earned a few C's and a few B's in my math courses over the years so I hope that this D does not shred my offer of appointment to pieces..

so after finals, my final grades came out:
C+ in physics, C in AP Government, D in Calculus, A in Psych, A in Northwest Studies, A in AP Literature and A in ROTC. safe to say that I am "safe"?
 
Yes, most likely.

However, you probably realize you're going to have to work really hard come NAPS and USNA. They will help you with study skills, etc. But you also have to give it 100% academically, plus do all the military and sports stuff. It's a challenge but one I'm sure you're up to.:thumb:
