14 CGA cadets could be expelled for using synthetic marijuana

New London— Fourteen cadets were notified today that they will be expelled from the Coast Guard Academy for using synthetic marijuana.

The cadets, who are currently being processed for disenrollment, have five days to appeal to Coast Guard Headquarters. Eight others have been implicated in the incident and are under investigation, according to the academy.

The military prohibits its personnel from using or possessing substances that produce psychoactive effects.

“While we are certainly disappointed with the conduct involved in this incident, these actions are not indicative of the behavior of our corps of cadets,” Rear Adm. Sandra L. Stosz, academy superintendent, said in a statement. “The use of synthetic marijuana is a troubling issue nationwide. As a military institution, we hold cadets to the highest standards of conduct and go to great lengths to ensure those standards are clearly understood and strictly enforced.”

The U.S. Naval Academy and the Air Force Academy have expelled students for synthetic marijuana, commonly known as “Spice,” and the military’s leaders have expressed concern over the rising number of incidents of designer-drug usage.

Sailors from the Naval Submarine Base in Groton and students at the Naval Submarine School have been kicked out of the service for using or possessing Spice.

Good! Let 'em burn. We had a kid two years behind me who had this problem, although I believe it was before an official U.S. military policy. He's was at the end of his road anyway... just a nail in the coffin.

Slow learning curve between the academies or is that just me?

Idiots tend to be self-selecting.... just makes it easier for the academies to graduate the right people.

So...uh.. will that give 14 more openings to the incoming class??

More coming. Most are coming from one particular class year.

When completed, this investigation could see the disenrollment of close to 10% of that class.

Jeez, what were they thinking? Of course, the answer is that they weren't thinking at all. See prior discussion thread about how the brains of teenagers are not fully formed.

They obviously were not thinking. Teenagers tend to see themselves as invincible. I am kind of curious how their use came to be known.

As to fully formed brains, there must be a lot of post teenagers out there whose brains never fully developed. Teenagers don't have the market cornered on stupidity but they certainly own a share of it.

This is a really unfortunate development. These are kids that had so much going for them and an opportunity that few get and they failed to recognize it as the privlege it is.

If they only knew what an incredible gift they had in their hands by being selected to attend the CGA they wouldn't have even considered doing something that would be a cause of expulsion. Spoiled and immature comes to mind. Grades, test scores and a host of extra-curricular activities that fill an application aren't everything in evaluating an appointment.

It's sad and I feel bad for their families. And for them. I mean how do you go home and tell your folks that I just threw an opportunity of a lifetime?

That will be a very difficult conversation. I am sure they are feeling miserable right now.

Not very big. Less than 300 people in an incoming class and only around 200 make it to graduation.

Thanks. That is smaller than I thought. An attrition rate of a third sounds pretty typical for SA/SMCs. Losing 10% because of spice use will be a big blow

Luigi, are you at liberty to tell us what class they're coming from? According to the Academy's local paper, The New London Day, the Academy said a cadet's education costs $365,500 for all 4 years. How will taxpayers recoup the cost of their education thus far?

The second chance program that that first link mentions is getting scaled down from what I've heard, which could put the people currently on sabbatical in a rough situation. I would seriously doubt anyone who was charged with using synthetic drugs getting back in under that program.

Remember; a certain percentage of cadets NOT GRADUATING is part of the financial equation. It's part of doing business. Forget that this was an honors, rules, reg, etc... issue. Pretend for a second that the economy was drastically improving and 100 west point, annapolis, or air force cadets in their 2nd year finished up the semester and simply said: "I QUIT". I don't want this any longer. They don't owe a penny. That's part of the academy's contract. Until the 1st day of classes starting your 3rd year, you can quit at any time and have 0-zero obligation. If you quit or get kicked out in your 3rd or 4th year then they can make you serve time as enlisted or seek to recoup money. Depending on why you were let go.

Only bring this up because any "Recouping" of costs would be punitive in nature. It would be part of the punishment. "If the academy/military saw fit". They could just as easily write it off. Depends on what class they are in; how much has been invested in them; and the nature of the discharge.

They don't. They make up an excuse.... like "I couldn't imagine killing someone" or "I couldn't just follow orders blindly like a robot". Some people believe them. They don't know any better.

I feel no sympathy for these individuals. The rules on the subject were clearly defined. We don't need the nation's future drug enforcement officers using drugs. I don't want them in my Corps.
