A Navy tradition caught up with the repeal of the U.S. military's "don't ask, don't tell" rule on Wednesday when two women sailors became the first to share the coveted "first kiss" on the dock after one of them returned from 80 days at sea.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Marissa Gaeta of Placerville, Calif., descended from the USS Oak Hill amphibious landing ship and shared a quick kiss with her partner, Petty Officer 3rd Class Citlalic Snell of Los Angeles. The crowd screamed and waved flags around them.

Both women, ages 22 and 23 respectively, are fire controlmen in the Navy. They met at training school and have been dating for two years.

Navy officials said it was the first time on record that a same-sex couple was chosen to kiss first upon a ship's return. Sailors and their loved ones bought $1 raffle tickets for the opportunity. Gaeta said she bought $50 of tickets. The Navy said the money would be used to host a Christmas party for the children of sailors.

Beautiful picture, I hope that their love endures.

Why do I just have the feeling that this was run by a guy on the ship who rigged it just so all the guys on the ship could watch two girls kiss :shake:

Because you are a realist. My feeling. I'm only ok with PDA if it involves attractive people.

Nice how they got the shore ties in the picture. Couldn't they have had a more scenic backdrop than the grey superstructure?

My guess: If there were any "rigging" of the contest, it occurred at the direction of someone far above anyone on the ship.

I'm sure somewhere outside of that picture some crusty old chief is gnashing his teeth. Cool story though.

Also, LITS, not a whole lot scenic about an LSD.

Of course, the firestorm that would have occurred if the two "winners" had been two men would have been epic.

They'll just have to get over it. Or retire. Progress is a good thing.

I think this will really become a sensational story the moment it is no longer is a sensational story.

High Res Copy Anywhere?

I would love to purchase a high resolution copy of this image for print for a friend of mine, if you happen to know where I can get one please let me know, it would mean a lot.

Try the Virginia Pilot newspaper at www.pilotonline.com. The photo was apparently taken by one of their staff photographers and there is a link to purchase on-line.

ART 134 references Respect and Decorum. Not stage a photo to make a statement. Damn, couldn't hold hands in public if one was in uniform. Then again you couldn't put your hands in your pockets on a cold day while cleaning garbage cans on KP. We do evolve. Liaison Officer for the photo op????

What caught my attention more than anthing else in this photo:

- The boat behind them didn't suddenly explode
- The other folks behind them don't appear to me they are about to suddenly lose their minds, light their torches, and commence to riot.
- China hasn't sneaked up behind the boat while they were distracted and captured the port while they weren't looking.

My overall impression: except for the historical perspective of this being the first time its captured on film as legally allowed, a NON-EVENT.

Just like many of us were saying for years now.....

And if it was 2 guys kissing instead, it would remain just that: a non-event that had no bearing whatsoever on National Security and the ability of our troops to defend this country and the priciples it stands for....

A novelty because its a "first". A long delayed, and about time it has happened, "first".... :thumb:

bleh , excuse me while i go throwup.

and not because of the image itself...but rather because of what it stands for....here represents one seed of America's destruction from within (along with many other seeds)...i just can only hope we can get America back on track before its too late...

Oh no! Two adults who love each other can show their affection in public now without fear of reprisal while serving in an honorable profession! Oh the horror!

USAFA_2012,

Before the thread gets locked, please enlighten us all why this is so distressful to you.

What exactly do you mean by your post?

If you are at the AFA right now, I can bet my life that there were homosexuals that entered with you, if your best friend came out tomorrow would you feel the same way?

wow. ignorant.

America is off-track for reasons other than same-sex couples that love and care about each other. It saddens me that people still have these ignorant ideas about what is "American" and what isn't. Excuse me while I go throw up over your close-minded values.

Perhaps his ideals are higher than just a sense of "nationalism" or "American"?

America is off-track for a number of reasons, some obvious and some we like to stick our heads in the sand to ignore.

I have to laugh when I see someone "throw up" while accusing someone of being close-minded.... seems a little close-minded (and I'm not saying my mind isn't a little "tight" on some issues....and I'm certainly not apologizing for it).

Do I want to see two guys kiss? No. Do I agree with homosexuality? No. Doesn't mean I don't have homosexual friends, and that I don't like those friends. I also don't agree with a number of my friends politically... but I happen to think its nice to associate with people you aren't a mirror image of... adds a little spice to life (no, not that "spice" 14 bad CGA cadets...)

I'm not a fan of PDA in most situations (unless I'm involved) and certainly not in uniform.

I don't expect everyone to agree with me, and I don't agree with everyone. Guess that's what separates me and Barack Obama.

i'd bet my life that there are homosexuals here too! no argument there....but unfortunately i could also bet my life there are pedophiles elsewhere in the Air Force as well. but that doesn't mean the military should support or condone pedophilic actions. now, i'm not saying homosexual actions = pedophilia, i'm simply saying that just because people feel a certain way doesn't mean it's right to act upon those feelings, let alone have the government openly condone those actions to be "right".

so, yes, i believe the public condoning of homesexual actions is something that is evidence of this nation's moral depravity -- a depravity, which if not fixed, will play a key role in America's eventual demise.
