disclaimer : ok...not "helicoptering" here....just simply my curiousity...

What are the usual living options for newly minted officers attending flight school at Pensacola NAS ? Do most find off-base apartments ? Are they even qualified as "trainees" for an on-base BOQ ? Im sure my Firstie will get "briefed" at the appropriate time but that info rarely filters back to me. Thanks !

:director: GO NAVY,

They will find housing on their own and I don't know if there was ever a housing 'brief'. If there was, my '11 either didn't mention it to me or didn't attend. I hd gotten a list of apt. complexes from someone and sent to my kid to give a start. My kid and room mates started looking after they received P'cola report dates. April time frame I think? They kept in touch with previous grads who pointed them in general direction of apartments/house/condos and in fact ended up taking an apt., their '10 friends were leaving. Also, most seem to get furnished places because they are there for such a short period of time. There's a plethora of housing available for new ENS's. Same goes for Corpus Christi if your kid follows on there. All your Firstie needs to do is Google 'Pensacola housing rentals' and he'll get thousands of hits.

All of my friends from '11 got houses/apartments/condo's off base. With 3-4 people living in a place it's really not that much money for them, and it's a lot more fun than living on base.

Since the name of this thread is "Flight School Question" I hope you don't mind me adding a question.

My son is going to Army Flight School at Ft. Rucker, he has not received his report date yet or had any briefings, I'm sure information will come his way in time but like the OP said, it doesn't filter back too fast. Do flight students at Rucker live on base, how soon should they begin the process. He has told us that it will be a PCS so the Army will move him there, we were just wondering if anyone had any insight on the housing, are the units furnished, I only ask because we have a few furniture items that we will hold onto if he will need them.

Thanks for any information.

BTW If my son is a Helicopter Pilot does that make me a Helicopter Parent....Sorry couldn't resist.

Scoutpilot should know all about it.

Unless things have changed so much, flight school is just like any station assignment and you are responsible for your living arrangements. There are many housing options available in Pensacola. For the first part my friends and I opted to live closer to PNAS, but we moved to the beach for the second part. Doubling up for an apartment or more for a house is always an option. It is easy to find roommates even in rotation while in the flight school environment.

Three our four in a beach house could not be bad.

Rucker may be a lot different now but did see a lot of those guys on the Florida Coast.:thumb:

Yes. You are a Helicopter Helicopter Parent. The best of all worlds and they can fly anything if they can fly one of those.

He can check Rucker Housing for assistance. Check for furnished apartments in the area on ZILLO or just Google furnished apartments for the area. Just went through it for Paris Island and it takes a while to find some good ones.
