We are from NC and the local recruiter keeps telling us NO Marine Corp ROTC scholarships will be awarded until March. Has anyone received a MC ROTC scholarship???

DS (sophomore Civil Engineering student at in-state public univ) 2 days ago was accepted to PLC (Platoon Leaders Course) following the mid-December announcement from his CO (DS is, WAS, an NROTC - Marine Option College Programmer) that the 2 1/2 year NROTC-Marine Option scholarship the CO had put DS up for in early fall was not granted to him, or anyone for that matter. So to begin the PLC application process, DS had to disenroll from NROTC - he was out there in "no man's land" for what seemed an eternity, but in reality was a little over a month (the PLC Review Board met Jan.3 with results announced Monday). I know this answer doesn't exactly address your question, but the 2 1/2 year NROTC-Marine scholarships aren't using up any of the budget this year.

^^^ The in school (eg. 2 1/2 and 3 year) scholarships are from a different budget than the 4 year high school scholarships (at least that's my understanding). Although indicative of the times, I wouldn't take this to mean that there are no 4 year scholarships for high school kids about to enter college next year.

Last year I don't think DS heard back until April. I believe that the NROTC MO board is separate from all other NROTC boards. I've also heard there is only one. So the OPs rumor mill may be accurate.

First, there are definately different boards for NROTC and NROTC MO boards.

In the past, there were multiple NROTC MO boards. No one knows for sure, but believe there are three.

Finally, I thought we had seen a couple hits on this forum in mid-December where a few people had gotten scholarship notifications. Recommend you go back and look for them. Seems like it was a "NROTC Scholarship - post your results here" type of post.

So, based on historical data points, I would say that "Navy Seal Mom" has incorrect information.

Congratulations kar57 on your son's PLC designation. I am sure that he is pleased with what is a more definitive process on his path towards a commission. Good luck to him!

Based on USMCGrunts post, perhaps the recruiter meant there would be no further awards until March. That would make sense if its when the final (or next) board meets. I read it as there being only a March board, which is not what you or he said. Sorry about that.

I can speak to last year. My son received a MO NROTC Scholarship. It was awarded on March 15th. If my memory is correct he was boarded in October. At the time, the recruiter informed us that all Marine Option Scholarships from the final 2 boards (October and February) were being released together. We are in the 8th district. The whole process was a mystery to me and I could only go by what the ROO was telling me.

Good Luck to you! It's been an amazing year for my son so far.

To clear things up: There are two Marine Option NROTC boards. The early board is in November and the regular board is in February. Typically it takes up to several weeks after the boards for notifications to go out, so that's why some don't hear until say, March for the regular board that occured in February.

So to answer Navy Seal Mom's question, yes -- there have been some scholarships awarded from the early board. The majority of scholarships are typically given out at the regular board though.

Thank you envied2 and Pilot2b. He did have the application ready for the November board however, the lead Captain from Columbia told me no one would be notified until March. My son is my only child and he has labored for this scholarship, USNA and USMMA applications.

Assuming he was boarded in November (since his application was ready) and was not awarded a scholarship then, he will automatically be looked at again in the regular February board. Since so few scholarships are awarded from the early board I would assume they only go to the extremely outstanding candidates. I'm sure they wait until February for most of the scholarships, to let the pool of applicants build up . That way they can see what they have to work with when awarding whatever scholarships they have available. There is no reason to give up hope.

I assume you have backup plans in place which might include doing NROTC as a College Programmer (the course my DS took), or doing the Platoon Leaders Course in the summers after entering college. I also assume you have completed, or are about to complete, the FAFSA application for other sources of financial aid?

I know this is an extremely frustrating and anxious time having gone through it last year. Fortunately, we had backup plans in place and a merit scholarship from DS's #1 school so all worked out well. He is now thriving as an NROTC College Programmer. But just so you know, we didn't hear about the merit scholarship until early April and we didn't get final notification until mid-April on the NROTC MO scholarship. It was quite nerve-wracking, but it is what it is.

Good luck to your son! I hope his dreams come true, but not getting an NROTC scholarship doesn't necessarily mean the end of those dreams. :thumb:

NROTC Nurse Option Board

I know there is also a separate selection process for NTOTC Nurse option candidates. Does anyone know how many boards, when they are typically held, and how competitive they are this year?

My daughter applied for the NROTC- Marine option scholarship this year. She is a senior in high school and is looking at heading to Texas A&M. We were told there were 2 boards of review. She was not chosen at the first board, but was notified she was chosen at the second board and we just heard on March 22. So it sounds like your information from the recruiter is accurate. As far as how competitive, I would also like to know how many were given out this year. Our recruiter said it was significantly less than last year b/c of budget cuts.

Whats the deadline to hear back for the applicants already in their freshmen year of college?
