Hello all,

I am considering applying to USMA for admittance into the class of 2017. I am currently going through Norwich University's "Rookdom" experiance and just completed my first college semester last fall. I got a 3.2 (Balancing everything here is a juggling act) I am also in the VT National Guard, going to OSUT (One Stop Unit Training) this summer in sunny Ft. Benning. I get out early to return for school Aug. 15 (thanks to our Army Colonel here.)

I am originally from Illinois. I am transfering back to IL (this place is really expensive and if I don't get into WP I continue along my ROTC route.) My question is, do I have better chances applying as a Civilian or as a National Guardsman? Additionally should I open a file now through West Point now before going to OSUT and that way in August I do my CFA? Or rather, apply once I return from OSUT and wrap that up in August-September of this year?

Will WP notice my status as a successful college AROTC student/being in the Army already? Will my physical on file with the Army be acceptable for what WP wants?

I am little lost in the sauce about this all...

Thanks in advance...

OSUT = One Station Unit Training

Apply as a National Guardsman. There are a certain amount of spots open to soldiers, that typically do not get filled. You also can get a Commanders Endorsement as your nomination, which is very helpful. Also, if you do not qualify for USMA, you typically will get a slot for USMAPS. You should open a file as soon as possible and get in contact with your USMA representative as soon as you can as well. They will notice your status as being a current cadet, but it may not affect you much. The medical documents you have from the Army can be used if they are up to date in West Points standard. I personally used a few previous documents I had to help speed up my medical packet, but a few I had to update.

If you have any other questions, let me know.

The most important advice to you is don't procrastinate and keep in contact with your USMA Rep (for soldiers I believe it is MAJ Liebhaber).

I agree with Sawndog - apply as National Guardsman. You probably already know this, but there is a specific USMA Admissions Officer that works with National Guardsman:

MAJ Brian Wire
National Guard Liason

Good luck!

Thanks for the help and point of contacts guys, much appreciated. Swandog I will sending a message your way soon, I want to get this underway...

I wouldn't be taking my CFA until this August, but can I have a file open and on hand?

Based on your advice I will go the Guard route then because it seems I have more realistic chances of getting in. Some others told me I am better trying the civilian route...

Your thoughts?

Regarding having an open file: Yes, you should open a file now so that you can begin the process of completing the initial information and then you can always submit the CFA in August. I would encourage you to contact MAJ Wire as he can provide specific information regarding your applcation as a National Guardsman.

The reason that I would encourage you to apply as a National Guardsman as opposed to a Civilian, is that the pool you are competing against is significantly smaller and USMA typically allocates a certain number of slots for those currently serving and a separate number for National Guard. I am sure others can provide their opinion, but there are simply more civilians applying (approx. 15,000) and I am not sure how many National Guard applications, but I am sure it is most likely less than 500 (someone with experience can help with more accurate). MAJ Wire or MAJ Leibhaber would be best to get the most accurate information and the requirements for admission.

Good luck!

Thanks a million HOOAH1775!

I will keep y'all updated so that way it will serve to be helpful to those who will be in the same position as I am in...

No problem. Thanks for your service in the National Guard!

I would not hesitate to contact USMA Admissions - they are a tremendous group and very helpful!

Thanks for the link! I will get in contact with the USMA admissions and start gathering all the knowledge required to make a well aimed shot at this.

Do I have to go through Beast if I had already gone through Basic and AIT as a Infantryman?
