Im not to involved within the detachment, plan on going into AAS next year and becoming more involved so the cadre notices me much more.

I know this year, 2011, the selection for FTP's was at around 50%. Knowing this, does 2012 seem more promising. Will more cadets be selected? What mainly can i do to improve my chances. What does the average GPA look like for next year? Anything i can do over the summer?

Your gpa is low for a non-tech field. The real thing is to look within your own cadre for improvement. No det job hurts you if others in your cadre as C100's got a job. You need to get a job within the det for next fall. The commander is an instrumental part of the scoring process, and if he doesn't have anything to write re:jobs/leadership within your cadre it is going to be an uphill battle for you.

It is expected that next yr will be hard hit, but not as hard hit as this yr. Also, remember that you will not only be competing against the other 200's, but 250's too. It is like the scholarship and AFSC board, they have limited slots, but class sizes vary. Hence if the class size is large like it was for this yr and last yr you will see a lower % accepted. If it is smaller as it will be for commissioning class yrs of 15 and 16, the % will increase. There will never be a 100% guarantee, but it will come back to the point of don't mess up, get good grades, and good PFA, plus a strong rec and it will be as close to a guarantee that anyone can give you.

Yea, I'm an AS100 right now and I'm scared because I'm a non-tech major and my GPA is around a 2.9. I'm really hoping our percent is about the same as the sophomores or a little higher.

Yea, i plan on getting a 3.5 gpa this semester so that will help. Also, which should i join, arnold air society vs. color guard? which one looks better when im being evaluated. Should i maybe change my major to arabic or a needed foreign language?

Join the group that you feel comfortable in. AAS and Color Guard are different at every det. It is really like the cadre where part of how it operates is about those within the unit.

In other words some groups are filled with cadets that have certain career field desires, hence, there is more bonding because the C300/C400's with AFSC's can mentor even more the C100/200's that want that career field.

Also, realize the one reason to join either organization is these cadets also are in the det., usually in at least a flight lead position. This allows them to know you more, instead of just being a face. Every semester jobs will change, and the Cadet leadership has a very small voice with the cadre. Obviously they will have a voice because they are your flight leaders, and if you are in a huge det., it is hard for the Commander to know every 100/200 personally. The CoC will rely on other voices to give them insight re:the cadet.

As far as changing the foreign language, I will not even touch that. I will say you need to look at specific issues.
1. Will that cause a problem with commission date? Will you not graduate on time?
2. What is your career goals? Going the needed language route can create a career issue if you want to fly.
3. In the end if you are weak in languages you can also jeopardize your chances there. It is the same as every poster says about engineering, don't go this route because you think it gives you the best chance. Go because you want it.

In 2011, 2000 cadets were selected to go, this year they are taking 2200, so a 10% increase, according to the Northeast Region CC for AFROTC (Col. Dunn)

As in everything, numbers only mean hope if you have every number in the equation.

10% increase is great, but the question for selection lies in; is the pool smaller, larger or the same as 11.

If I recall correctly, 14 was the yr they started to hit hard for scholarships, with that premise in mind, it would make sense that the selection rate will increase for this yr. I bet there will be lots of happy campers and sighs of relief.

However, TY they changed the formula reducing the Command % and increasing the cgpa %, so for some this can hurt them also.

Place on top of that the OP is a non-tech. 85% of scholarships are awarded to STEM, but only 75% of all STEM (scholarship or not) are selected for SFT. 45% of non-tech go to SFT. If they change the internal % to give more weight to STEM cadets and get it up to 85% selected, you will see non-techs needing even higher cgpas because less will be selected.

Debbie Downer, I know, but in a few short weeks people will chime in with their results and wonder why their det only had 50% selected and nationally 65% went, and why some colleges like VT will beat out the national rate.

It is the numbers inside the big picture that will tell you why or why not you were selected.

Going off just on the national rate will create a false sense of anything and everything. Looking inside at your det and placing that information will help you more.

JMPO, throw it in the circular filing cabinet, but I am betting the new system helps techs and hurts non-techs. Techs do get points added to their OML. They do this to offset the fact that they expect them to have lower cgpas than non-techs. Giving more % will give them more of an advantage because that portion now weighs more.

JMPO, remember that. Just saying, the AF is pushing STEM hard for the future.

Has this been confirmed yet? I had my sit down with my Commandant of Cadets a week ago who told me the same percentage weights as last year. (50% for det ranking)

I'd love to know the change will indeed take place for this year, because i'm skirting that bottom of middle third/top of bottom third line with only a couple weeks left for evaluation. My high CGPA/PFA/AFOQT gives me a decent shot, but if gpa/test weight increases i'm golden

I have heard both that it has and it hasn't. Some are saying it is for SFT13 and some are saying 12. However, it would be unusual for them to release it for 13 back last Nov. because all it does is create confusion.

I think the confusion is coming about because the rated board has changed for Class of 13 and people are assuming that SFT for 12 has also changed.

I look at it this way, the change will be an impact for many so it is best to bet on the worst case scenario, which for many will be the increase in the cgpa % as non-techs since they do give those extra points to techs. Techs also tend to carry more credits, thus more study hours and less time to be at the det.

I would concern myself not so much about getting it, but as you stated you are skirting low and after SFT how you rank out of there will be placed into your OML. That can be an issue since between RSS and SFT it will equate to 35% of your OML for rated.

They will score you out as DG, top 1%, 10%, 20%, 30% 50% and below 50%. This portion alone = 15% of the OML. RSS is 20%.
