subtitle: NROTC Scholarship Process – the Long Journey

“Very few people have been selected so far” –said DS’s recruiting officer (Petty Officer XXX) on the phone about an hour ago. So NROTC applicants who have the “all materials received – No decision has been made on your application” status are still very much in the running. Also mentioned, “Boards convene approximately once a month, sometimes more, and will continue convening for several more months.” That’s the Reader’s Digest version of the conversation which helps to explain the absence of a giant “NROTC Offers” thread on this forum… I think. It also helps to explain the appearance of DS’s “no decision made” status for months and months. A brief rundown of this particular “long journey” so far.
NROTC Officer Interview and complete application submitted May 2011 – end of DS’s junior year.
DoDMERB “qualified” for USNA – on DoDMERB status page - July 2011.
Updated test scores submitted in the fall 2011.
College acceptance letters begin arriving mid-November.
NROTC Officer interview #2 conducted mid-December.
USNA nomination mid-December.
#1 college acceptance letter arrives early January (Tier 1 Major - in state school).
NROTC Officer interview #3 conducted mid-January.
Explanation for 3 interviews divulged today, Jan. 31. Summary version “It’s the military” and “Hurry up and wait” oh and “Stuff happens”

The first interview, May 2011, was scheduled with Commander XXX at the local recruiting office. Commander XXX was called out suddenly just before DS walked into the interview room. DS waited over an hour before the replacement was ready to begin. Interview took place, but, as was explained today, this interviewer filled the paperwork out incorrectly, not providing enough information in the right format. This didn’t come to light until mid-December when Pensacola called the local recruiting office and said another interview needed to be conducted with DS because although what they had was good, it wasn’t in the proper format and was, therefore, incomplete. So interview #2 is scheduled at a different site with LCDR XXX. A day or two after DS’s mid-December 2nd interview, LCDR (the interviewer) was sent out on temporary assignment and was unable to input DS’s interview before leaving. And so 2011 disappears and in its place is the brand new year – 2012. Back at the local recruiting office someone notices that this kid (my DS) still has no proper interview and seeing that he is “falling through the cracks” (words the Petty Officer XXX used today), a 3rd interview is scheduled. Petty Officer XXX also said this was an “odd scenario and not normal at all.” He did confirm that the 3rd interview conducted on Jan.13 had in fact been properly executed and input – so that’s good news! As mentioned above in the summary version, sprinkled throughout the conversation were the statements, “It’s the military” and “hurry up and wait” and “stuff happens.” And I can confirm “Yes it is” and “yes we are” and “Yes it does!”

So to all those still waiting, that’s good news for now! Good luck to all!

Ahhh. The mystery of the three interviews is finally solved! What a comedy of errors. Glad its all straightened out now. :thumb:

Thanks for the insight

Its what I assumed was going on. I think that the lack of responses to the NROTC offers indicated that they have a lot of scholarships left to offer. I spent 10 years as a pilot in the Marines and have got used to the frustrating Hurry up and wait! It was a madhouse of urgent activity back in june. My daughter checks her status every day.

It would Just be refreshing to know either way so we could make college plans.

Thanks again for the insight.

Wow, I thought the AROTC Process was involved, my hats off to all you NROTC applicants.

Good Luck, glad to hear it all seems a go for your son now.

As intruder stated that is the military, Hurry up and wait. It will be like this for as long as they remain in, even in ROTC when it comes to career assignments.

That being stated after a while you do just accept this as a part of life and laugh about it, because you take on the opinion of Oh well!

Website Update

My son checked his NROTC website today and the status page that had indicated that "No Decision Had Been Made Yet" was no longer there. It now simply states

"The application is closed for the 2012 Scholarship Year.
Check back periodically for dates to apply for the 2013 Scholarship Year."

Does this mean that a decision has been made? If so, was it a rejection?

No Change To Date

My son checked his page, the information remains the same as it's been since the start of this journey.

I can say that he updated his SAT scores and they went to the board but the scores were not updated on the page. As I understood it there are only like two or three people that handle updating the packages. They make sure the board is update with what they need and the web site comes last.

I spoke with an 06 On Monday that was once on the board (not long ago). He said just hold on an wait. They will at times board people as soon at Aug. but you may not know until April.

Very painful as parents but we just have to take the hit until the final letter is sent off.

On a good note, my son is 4 for 4 on acceptance letters to date and 2 for 2 for his NROTC list. This has nothing to do with the scholarship but at lease he has something to look fwd. to. He can now begin to develop his "B, C, & D plan in the event plan "A" does not work. It's all good...

Ahhh A Change

My sons page changed today... He submitted a new set of SAT scores a few weeks ago. Its no real news flash; however, there is movement.

This just in...

...from NSTC, Pensacola, in an e-mail response to DS's request to update his file (7th semester transcript, NHS selection, and college acceptance letters) -"Sorry but our website closed 31 Jan for any updates or changes, but we will add your college acceptance letters to your file." So Blacklab...very good to have had those SAT scores submitted a few weeks ago! BTW, in that phone conversation one week ago, on February 1, where Petty Officer XXX revealed the facts surrounding the 3 NROTC Interview Mystery, he also emphasized that "until a decision is made, you can still add updates to your file such as your 7th semester transcript, any awards, college acceptance letters, etc. as they come along." So DS did just that - Well, at least they took the college acceptance letters...the sit back and nothing to be done now part of the process has officially commenced...

Does anyone know when the next scholarship selection board meets for NROTC? My son applied to both the AROTC and NROTC - and has been awarded an AROTC Scholarship. His NROTC status page still reads the same as many others - "no decision..."

He's got the mindset that if he doesn't hear from the Navy by the end of the month than he's going to live with whatever school he chooses for the Army and the college process is over for him. We are simply curious if anyone knows anything about NROTC.

I believe the Navy does not release the dates for their boards, They hold that information very close to the vest.

Remember, your son can accept the AROTC scholarship and still wait for the NROTC decision. If your son receives a NROTC scholarship he can accept that as well and then decide which one to take, once he makes that decision he can then decline the other offer.

Hi Northerner! In a phone conversation from last week with the Petty Officer at local recruiting office, DS was told that not even he is privvy to the dates of Selection Boards, but that they occur approximately once a month, sometimes more, and will continue for awhile yet. The Petty Officer also mentioned that very few had been selected so far. We're all trying to remain positive here, but every now and then a dark cloud of doubt rolls in...as a parent it sometimes is difficult to maintain a balance between hopefulness and harsh reality. For me, I don't care to express to DS my sinking feeling regarding the snafu with the triple interview deal. "Get the application completed, make the requests to teachers, counselors well before the end of school, cross all the t's, dot all the i's, put your best foot forward, etc." - these are words of wisdom from many folks in many places: recruiting officers, admissions officers, high school counselors, and those who "have been, done that," and BGO's, ALO's, I don't know's:frown: So, yes, it was middle of May, end of DS's jr. year, when NROTC app. and interview were completed. We thought! Reality? No. The interview part went missing, not once, but twice and what was thought to be a complete, board ready app. in May 2011, is in the "just completed, Johnny Come Lately" pile of January 2012having just now become board ready, ready just before the final deadline came for this year's group. So all that amazing effort last May, that good feeling of having accomplished a difficult task, up against the early clock, for naught, I feel. Sorry for the rant...I'm definitely having one of those dark cloud rolling in moments. I'll snap out of it before DS gets home from school.

kar57 - good luck to you guys, I really mean that. My son is at the point where he's just going to make a decision regarding the two AROTC schools and roll with it. If NROTC comes in after the fact, oh well. I appreciate parents like you guys that keep the rest of us informed - because some of us need a lot of help about how this whole process works

Northerner --

There are some pretty significant differences in the ROTC experience, leaving aside of course the difference in daily life in the Army vs. Navy... so accept the Army award and wait patiently for Navy... then decide.

- Army does not heavily favor STEM students as Navy does in its Awarding
- Army has no mandatory summer training after freshman and sophomore years (but also there is not pay during summer)
- Army does not require a year of Calculus and a year of Calculus-based Physics
- Army allows Branching right out of college into specialty fields like Military Intelligence, Medical Services, Quartermaster, Adjutant General, etc. whereas Navy does but only after 3-4 years in the primary billet.
- Army until this year allows changing from a STEM major to an Art History or other Humanities/Social Science major while Navy does not.
- Army 4 yr. Stipend + Book Allowance is about $4,000 more in total than Navy
- Navy does not offer 3 Yr. AD scholarships to private schools, whereas in Army that seems to be the norm now. That's a BIG financial difference... as much as $48,000 rack rate.
- Army ROTC is offered many colleges that do not offer Navy ROTC

and a few more.

Any idea when NROTC college assignment coming out? thank you.

Any idea when NROTC college assignment coming out? thank you.

I'm assuming, based on your question, that your portal indicated you received a scholarship. You should be notified of the school(s) when you receive the formal letter offering the scholarship. If that is not your question please report with a more specific one.

Hi: Any idea on 2012 NROTC unit/college assignment. Our son is waiting on it, it past their tentative announcement date (Mid Dec.). Please shed some light. Thank you.
