I completed my application a long time ago, but I don't know if I'm 3Q'd.

If I am 3Q'd, Should my USAFA portal read that I am a "Qualified Candidate," "
Qualified Alternate," or will it even change?

It currently reads "Complete."

Thanks,
LFry

If your DODMERB line states "qualified" you're probably Ok. My son's page just states "Candidate" as well. I believe that means you're good to go. I know my son's 3Q because his counselor stated he was and it still shows his status as Candidate.

I think it will only change when you are made an appointment offer.

Best

Most people should know if they are 3Q. If you weren't, you'd probably know. The 3Q's are:

1. Physically: CFA test. You know if you couldn't do something or you bombed it.
2. Medically: If you weren't medically qualified, it would say so on your application.
3. Academically: That one is tricky. 3.2gpa and 25ACT is "Qualified", but chances of an appointment; (Unless you got a principal nomination or there were NO OTHER NOMINEES on your MOC's slate); are really slim. So that's the only one that's possibly vague.

The thing about this however is: "Normally", you can't become a "Candidate" unless you are qualified across the board; OR you receive a nomination. So, if you received a presidential nomination because your mom/dad is retired military; but you have a 1.3gpa, you'd be listed as a "Candidate" because you have a nomination, but you wouldn't qualified. Also, you could have a MOC nomination making you a Candidate, but didn't take the DODMRB physical or CFA yet, so you might not be qualified.

But under NORMAL circumstance, if you were classified as "CANDIDATE" PRIOR to getting your nomination..... then you KNOW FOR A FACT that you are qualified. Because the only way to become a candidate is to be 3Q Qualified. (Or you received a nomination). But most MOCs won't give a nomination if you suck academically. DODMRB will say on the application if you aren't qualified. And you know if you didn't pass the CFA. Hope this explains it.

I can only reference what they did last year. USAFA does not indicate if you are "3Q'd". They only let you know when you move from "Applicant" to "Candidate". Usually when you get a nomination or the Academy deems you qualified. Romad is right. Your "Complete" will change (hopefully) to "Appointment Offered" but you'll still be listed as a "Candidate".

Sorry, cross posted with CC.

Like I said, you can be classified as a "CANDIDATE" and be totally unqualified. If you receive a nomination, which could be a presidential back in July; that is enough to change your status to "Candidate". But for the majority of the people, what I wrote above will tell if they are 3Q.

Thanks for your posts Dad and CC. I appreciate it.

I was above average on everything in the CFA, with the exception of pullups and pushups where I was lacking a bit. I am DoDMERB qualified. My GPA at the end of this semester will probably be 3.7ish, (up from 3.61) and my superscored ACT is 28. (Taking the ACT again in the morning, because my ALO said that my scores have a chance of reaching USAFA in time to make a difference on my application should I not receive a BFE before the scores are released.) I also received a nomination from my congressman.

I remember my status going from "Precandidate" to "Tentative Candidate" to "Candidate." It never read "Nomination" or "Qualified Candidate" like is listed in this year's USAFA catalog. (2011-2012)

I guess there isn't an easy way to know.

My son's portal has shown "Candidate" and "Complete" for a long time. After recently receiving a nom he did receive a post card that said you are now an "Official Candidate" but the portal didn't change other than to add his nom in that section. He is definitely 3Q determined as CC indicated and this was verified by his ALO.

Interesting, I also received that postcard. I wonder why the 2011-2012 catalog lists "Qualified Candidate" as one of the statuses one will receive when it doesn't appear it's being used at all.
