Well, my son just found out he was fortunate enough to receive one of Sen. Jeff Session's USAFA nods and that completes all of the noms he applied for. He has 1 Senate (all we applied for), 1 MOC, and a Presidential. I still only give him 1 chance in 2 of making it this year though. It's looking really tough.

That pretty much writes fini to our paperwork war that started about a year and a half ago. It's been quite an experience and I'm really ready for a cold beverage in a figurative way if you know what I mean! Hopefully all of you waiting for March out there will realize your dreams and a BFE awaits you in a month or so.

I'm starting this thread just so our great state is represented here on the roster.

Best Regards to all of you!

I am glad that you started the thread. I was going to do it myself! I am from Alabama, and my son has 2 nominations. ONe from Sen. Jeff Sessions and one from our local Congressman. He applied last year (had 2 nominations) and after waiting till April 7... did not recieve an appointment. He is attending Marion Military Institute ( MMI) on a Presidential Scholarship as an un-sponsored cadet. He is taking part in the SAP program and is playing baseball. He likes it for the most part and it has certainly prepared him for the NA if he recieves an appointment this year.

Good luck to your son!

Hi There!

Small world!

One of the options my son has worked on was being accepted over there for the SAP too We're about 40 min from Marion, however, Col Lewis was a little concerned about what academic good they could do the kid since he'd be going there with over 30 credits from UWA and a 4.28 WGPA already (didn't want him spinning his tires)...

My point to my son though was, if you don't get appointed this year and remain hard over on the Academy, then try to get a sponsored slot over there and with the fantastic acceptance rate they have, he'd have a real shot next year. Otherwise just use his T7 at Auburn. BTW, we also heard from Session's as well, the son received one of his noms too just last week - no interview though, He did have to interview with our 7th District MOC.

I wish your son the best of luck, a BFE, and I'll bet he knows JB who was the Asst Pitching Coach there for a while - he's my Buddy's son.

Best

From what we have been told about the sponsored spots... They are mainly given to kids that need a little work on the academic side. It sounds like your son is not lacking there. But you never know.

One thing good about attending Marion.. is that you see first hand how the academies will work. YOu get a really good feeling about what it is all going to be about. Will make you realize for sure if this is truly what you want to do.

My DS did not have to interview for Sessions either. But had to for 5th district MOC. He drove up here 3 1/2 hours for a 2 min interview, then drove back to school.

Again... Go0od luck,

Heck, with the space shot qualifications everyone has this year, he's probably no higher than lower 3rd of applicants and actually may be deemed to NEED it! :shake:

Actually, you hit the nail on the head and that's why MMI is a distant option "D", he should just pick AU or Norwich and move on if he doesn't get a BFE this year IMHO, but it's his life so I can only give input and let him make the choice

I'll bet your son will be at the "Boat School on the Chessie" this time next year.

Hang in there, March is just around the corner!

Romad and nj, Congratulations on the nominations!! Has to be some relief to have one hurdle down. We are hoping for some positive news for you and looking forward to having Alabama represented at the Academy!:thumb:

AL Nominations

I just joined in and decided to share. We are from North AL and my son received 3 nominations (both sens & rep, AL-05). Today I found a press release by Sen Shelby announcing his noms for the Mobile area. There were 2 noms to USAFA. I have been trying to follow this only to determine how many actual noms went out for the state. We have already executed plan B and accepted the full tuition scolarship to AU and will be attending camp war eagle...that hurts to type cuz I like to yell RTR! If our son does get USAFA we will wait until successful completion of BCT before dropping/withdrawing AU. Best of luck to all for the appointment.

Hiya!

My Wife is from the Florence area and we have lots of family there - nice place to be! We did not apply to Shelby because he won't issue a nomination if we have one in hand already, we got Terri Sewell's (AL7) and one of Jeff Sessions' along with a Presidential. I'm pretty sure Sessions issued his full slate, however, our MOC has several USAFA openings and she didn't have enough applications to fill all of her slates for those openings - they probably went to the National Pool.

I did find this.

Our plan B is the same - AU Engineering on his ROTC scholarship, maybe the boys will see each other there at CWE! We're of the same mind as well, if he's fortunate enough to receive an appointment, we're going to bubble wrap and hold onto the option till BCS is over... I'm with you about the War Eagle stuff though... We don't just have a "House Divided" we have a house trifurcated...

Good luck to your son, best regards, and see you there!

I know several candidates who received their Rep's nom AND Shelby AND Sessions.

This is last year's announcement of noms.

Last I heard - Vacancy winner for one of the AL Senator's slates for USMA has not been determined yet.

"Junk in, Junk out"!!! Sorry about that (shoulda checked the date better :yllol:)! I think all of our best chances lie with our local MOCs, I haven't heard a peep about any appointments to USAFA from Bama, but I'm sure they're coming...

Yes, but we had a nom in hand at the time and this is the information we got from his office... They asked if he did, and we're certainly not going to lie about it...

No problem. I didn't notice the date at first either. But when I read the list and saw a name that is currently a Plebe, then I checked the date. :thumb:

True - your best chance is with your District's Congressional Representative.

I'm a West Point FFR so I'm not in tune with what is happening with the USAFA appts, but like you, I have not heard of anyone hearing from USAFA yet.

Just want to make sure that anyone reading this understands that they should apply to every nom that is available to them.

Of course you shouldn't lie, but it is still advised to apply to each MOC.
What if Shelby ended up not having a full slate. He could then add those that already have a nom in hand.
My DS already had his REPs nom months prior to when Shelby and Sessions submitted their slates, but he still applied for both SEN noms and got them.

It's good to have as many noms as you can get!

Absolutely concur, our experience will be different than everyone else and we've applied for everything else. I think our mistake in this was my son calling their office for more information after he saw that posted on their website, and we were told the same thing by a retired Army O6 who's now a police chief in the B'Ham area whose son is at WP.

Sooo, of course being eager to stay in the lines, he called and now you know the rest of the story... I'd say it validates that little old gem of a saying that "It's better to ask forgiveness..." :yllol:

Best Regards

This is a good lesson for future applicants.

Only get and take advise regarding the admissions process from West Point, your RC or your FFR.

The Admission's process is ever changing. It is different every year. This year is different than last year. Last year was different than the preceding year, etc.
It is best to get info from those that have the most current information. :thumb:
I doubt a RC or FFR would advise anyone not to apply to every nom available since that is pounded into our heads by the Admission's folks at WP !

It is beautiful up here. As far as the nomination requests we were told early on in the application process by the assigned usafa counselor to seek as many nominations eligible to apply for including the vice presidential nomination.

Our plan B is a non AFROTC scholarship, but the Presidential Scholarship (full tuition) awarded by AU. He chose this over the Baylor scholarship since he and a couple of friends will just join up with the AU AFROTC when they arrive on campus. We only lose out the $200 deposit if the BFE and successful BCT occurs. You just don't know what can happen at BCT and next thing you know you are medically DQ'ed as a result of an injury. With plan B in place he could still make the fall semester.

Which housing area is your son choosing? Mine wants the Honors Dorms in the Quad.
