My son is traveling alone to KP in March. What is the best mode of transportation from JFK airport to KP?
Best regards,
Ozzy's Mom

Cab is practically the only way to go. Can grab one at the airport. I also sent a pm with numbers

FYI, Friendly Taxi is not so friendly. I believe this has come up before but recently some had issue with them again. Ollies Taxi is who my DS uses but he always goes in to LaGuardia. I hear that is easier if you have not already purchased tickets for JfK. DS did an overnight there on his own too and it was fine. I think it is a good way to handle it. Also keep in mind if he has an interview (that isn't supposed to be an interview.....) I hear it is! Be dressed appropriately. Slacks, tucked polo, undershirt, belt, decent shoes, ( athletic okay if in good shape) etc. DS said he and another kid who was with his parents and wearing shorts and flip flops were casually interviewed ( was in late August). The kid with the parents and too casually attired got all the hard questions,,,lol:thumb: DS said he walked out feeling he was much more respected being there representing himself.

Interview

Lynpar is correct. The interview, while not an interview, is an interview. The meeting with the admissions officer will allow them to put a face with a name and paperwork but will also be a touch point where they will look at him for fit, desire and drive. Anyone he comes into contact with at the academy will be asked their opinion of him, even the mid he stays with or the one that escorts him around. He should be wearing business casual attire, khakis or dress slacks, definitely a shirt with a collar, tucked in his trousers, belt, shoes, socks and be well groomed, meaning clean shaven and a good haircut. Be prepeared with a coat in case it's cold and gym clothes in case he is going to work out with his host.
He should be prepared for the Why do you want to come here ?, and the answer shouldn't be b/c I didn't get into the Naval Academy or some other academy. He should also be prepared with strong questions for the admissions rep too, something he's not going to find the answer to in the catalog or on the website.
If you have any other questions , PM me. I'm a college counselor and we're a 3rd generation KP family.

^^^^and was one of my mentors last year :thumb:
Thank you

Coming from a midshipmen at KP who hosts recruits, I can assure you that, while admissions may interview candidates, the host will not be interrogated about you DS/DD and is not normally asked an opinion of his or her recruit. I would recommend anyone who is visiting to just be themselves once the interview is over, as it will be easier to get a feel for the place if one is not stressing over appearance, attitude, etc.

Thank you for the advice! I received a PM recommending Herbie's Comfort Ride. My son will be arriving on the red eye from San Diego to JFK, so I hope he cleans up before he arrives at KP!

Weather

FYI ... NY in March can be downright cold, especially on the shore line (it's not SanDiego weather) be sure to bring a warm jacket/coat... can also be quite pleasant, you just never know.

I believe my DS' admissions interview was a major factor in helping him get admitted. He and I were in a coat and tie, and the other family in the conference room with us were way under-dressed. At one point during the "interview", the admissions officer looked at my son and said 'I like you tie'. I remember telling my DS afterward that that comment was actually directed to the other candidate who was not in a coat or tie. I strongly believe that if your DS wants to impress someone at the USMMA, a coat and tie will always help. It will be received as a clear sign that your DS respects the school, its history, and, most of all, its heroes from yesterday.

Is it okay to wear a uniform if you are currently a cadet at a military prep school?

If you search back through the threads under 'overnight visit' you come up opinions on this. The answer I remember seeing about that particular question was no to the uniform. But there were different thoughts and reasons.

Horsefeathers.... DS got his nomination, filled in the paper work and got his LOA without setting foot on campus. We looked at the student profiles from all the SAs when he started 6th grade and hit all the high points. Grades, leadership opportunities, AP classes, Scouting and community service. Plan do check act on the profiles and made sure all the punches were on the ticket. Dropped him off at Indoc and haven't looked back. USMMA wasn't his only choice, but for him it was the best choice that he has NOT regretted once. Nothing fancy, no suits or ties or non-interviews. Just plain hard work and courage. Character does count and will prevail.

My son also was accepted without a visit. We did go for a visit in the spring after he sent in his paperwork. He graduated last June.

Usmma2013dotcom,
That may be true for your DS. As you stated you began your preparation back in the 6th grade. I commend you for being on top of things so early. That wasn't our experience. For us it wasn't until Junior year DS started to think about what he wanted and what he was going to need to do to get there. Some applicants may be borderline on paper but need that extra something they can get from the overnight and in person introduction. My DS had some stellar things in his application package but grades alone would not have done it. So our advice is to seize every opportunity to make and impression for your application. Sending DS alone for an overnight was a great investment ( about 250, I think ). Did it make a difference? I dunno. Would he have gotten in without it? I dunno, probably, maybe? But it did create even more desire for DS to do his best in all things until he received his conditional and through out the rest of his senior year. He also did the overnight at USCGA. Also helpful. But yes I have been on our younger kids much earlier! I am teachable too :thumb:.

He should take a taxi on his first visit but note that in the future, the Air Train from JFK to the Jamaica station is $5 and takes about 10 minutes. It runs every 10 minutes. From there, you can take the LIRR to Great Neck (one transfer is involved) and the cost is ?? est $10-$15. The bus service from Great Neck station to the academy is $2.00. My son had always used LaGuardia, but when he came back to school after a quick visit during the hurricane, he only could get a flight into JFK. He was surprised at how easy it was to get to the academy. Note: my son doesn't mind walking from the Great Neck station to Kings Point but others may feel this 3.3 mile walk is too much!!!

In uniform carrying luggage? My kid would take a cab in a heartbeat! And he does have his iron man ribbon! :thumb: but good to know on the JFK flights. They sometimes are a better deal, thanks!

cab

We like Great 1 Limo (They are actually cabs, not limos). They are reliable but you need to set up the ride before hand, AND he needs to CALL the phone number WHEN HE LANDS to say that he's landed as well. Sometimes there is a 15 min (approx) wait when you have called them after you landed. I found that to be the case with whatever company you use. I have been warned to NEVER use a yellow cab. They charge more and are not preferred for other reasons. I think (?) the fee from JFK is about 50 dollars (approx). We always fly into LGA (LaGuardia) which is about 15-20 min to the Academy. The fee from LGA to the Academy is often times around 42 dollars. But we've learned that sometimes the fees change a bit. Make sure to tell them when you set up the cab that he is going to the Academy- they often times will give a special cheaper Academy rate as well.

The phone number for Great 1 Limo is 516-466-1166

Good Luck and safe travels to you DS
